these dynamics are causal to things like film experimenting with narrative - it's straining at the limitations of the medium. but does that make it better or worse at telling a story than literature?

the obvious punchout answer is that it depends on the story, but that also seems the correct one
December 5, 2025 at 7:29 PM
very generally speaking, in one sense film is much more the presentation of a story in literal terms, WYSIWYG. meanwhile a book's limitations in presenting the specific perspective of the author also act as a mode of engagement in that the reader engages in filling in a whole lot of blanks
December 5, 2025 at 7:25 PM
i think the contemporary industries around the two being nightmares is kind of a given, but also irrelevant as the inherent capabilities of each medium exists separate from that

i think the more interesting perspective goes back to 'what is storytelling and how does one tell a story'
December 5, 2025 at 7:23 PM
what tells stories better, books or movies?
December 5, 2025 at 7:04 PM
to be fair, a white dutchman going up to a black person and saying "my culture is not your costume" is a really good bit
December 5, 2025 at 5:10 PM
yeah it owns

you are thinking of this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BL_15-i...

and i am talking about this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BL_15-i...

the bl 15 inch mk1 naval gun is a deck gun on a surface craft and not a howitzer

the bl 15 inch howitzer is a heavy siege howitzer that was developed the previous year by coventry ordnance

never gonna forget the time he used it to "go" to puerto rico after hurricane maria to do a high five in the middle of a destroyed neighborhood
December 5, 2025 at 4:26 PM
duck soup is still a classic
December 5, 2025 at 4:15 PM
that's just knowing some tangential things off wikipedia and using them incorrectly to be an asshole instead of having fun with a fun question
December 5, 2025 at 4:15 PM
it's not pedantry to ask why someone would pick a large caliber in response to a "what's the largest caliber?" question, to respond to "depower the shell ofc" with "but the full power shell is too strong", or to say that two siege howitzers that were never navally deployed are exclusively naval guns
December 5, 2025 at 4:14 PM
the 15 inch howitzer has a 15 inch shell? my word
December 5, 2025 at 4:09 PM
to keep the shells in the cheaper tax bracket ofc
December 5, 2025 at 3:48 PM
i was specifically thinking something like the BL 15 incher or the m-gerat's 17 inch barrel, with powered down shells
December 5, 2025 at 3:47 PM
a gargantuan low velocity howitzer shooting at like 50 degrees elevation with a shorter range than a guy hitting a golf ball
December 5, 2025 at 3:32 PM
thank you
