One of my favourite parts of my job is getting to learn firsthand from Canadian fire managers about their usage and perspectives of remote sensing data in decision making.

This week we hosted a delegation from France at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre in Sault Ste. Marie. The delegation included representatives from l’Office National des Forêts, Valabre, the Bouches-du-Rhône fire department, & the French embassy to Canada.

We discussed all things fire! 🌲🔥🚒✈️🛩️🛰️📡

This session proposes a comprehensive exploration of advancements in wildland fire management, monitoring, and modeling by integrating Earth observation technologies and collaborative development efforts. We will highlight innovative approaches that foster cross-boundary, multi-jurisdictional collaborations among tribal, local, federal, and international partners. For example, efforts like Canada’s WildFireSat mission, NASA FireSense, the Pyregence Consortium, and the internationally funded GOFC-GOLD Fire Mapping and Monitoring Implementation Team are creating transformative wildland fire science, data products, and tools built on relationships and knowledge exchange. Super cool day today visiting the AFFES hangar at YAM to see the water-bombers in person. Pretty awe-inspiring!

Ontario relies heavily on their CL-415 fleet for fire management. Also, Dr. Mel Wheatley of AFFES is leading Canada in research to better understand their suppression effectiveness! 🌲🔥✈️💧

Happy to be back in Sault Ste. Marie this week for a series of stakeholder meetings at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre - Canadian Forest Service (NRCan).

All about fire monitoring with satellites, fire danger, fire risk and management! I am usually remote from Ottawa, so this is a treat!
