I thought "Panzer" in German meant "panther", in line with 'Tiger tanks', because of similar pronunciation.
But it just means "armor", a reference to French 'pancier' ("breastplate") which derives from Latin 'pantex' for "belly".
So 'Panzerfaust' = "armor fist" or, just for fun, "belly punch".
