The UK is suffering a great loss of influence in the Global South, and other nations such as China and Russia are stepping into the vacuum. The government should not underestimate the value of 'soft power' for national security and influence.

Helping them grow their economy is obviously a good thing, but surely that is what overseas development aid should be designed to do. By reducing the burden of disease and poverty in a nation, you are enabling more people to work and the local government to invest in other areas of their economy.

Respectfully, I don't think this is the win you think it is. It's not really resetting the relationship - this implies both sides have agreed. Actually the UK has decided and imposed these funding cuts on the Global South.
