That being said, the Soviets lied about the circumstances of Leontovych's death for decades afterwards (they blamed it on UPR bandits) so they're not off the hook for his death either. It just wasn't an intentional assassination like people claim it was.

He was forced to leave Kyiv in 1918 when the White Army took power. As for his murder, there's no evidence it was an intentional assassination and the Soviets almost immediately put out a warrant for the murderer's arrest (apparently this wasn't the first robbery/murder he did).

In reality, the Soviets actually promoted Leontovych's work and legacy and claimed him as one of their own. It wasn't entirely unprecedented either; Leontovych participated in the 1905 Revolution and during the Civil War, he was involved with both the UPR and the Soviets.

I was really surprised when I first found this album because at the time, the only things I knew about him besides "Shchedryk" were that he was involved in the Ukrainian People's Republic government and was killed by a Chekist and I assumed the Soviet Union ignored him. Turns out I was wrong.
