Thinking solely about numbers is counterproductive and dehumanising. There is no magic number for what migration should look like. To pretend there is is fundamentally ignorant of what the country and the people living in it need.

And how we treat people who *need* to be here i.e. refugees, family members. And the people *we need* to be here i.e. care workers, agriculture, hospitality, students.

Lots of people will red the net migration figures and jump for joy or ask for more. Those people are sometimes racists, sometimes want to appease racists, and sometimes people who don't understand immigration or the economy. Ultimately, what matters is how we treat people who are already here.
