I think vapor's perhaps slightly broader than that - but certainly, projecting the modern state of the wistful eye onto a text that was actively critical of its time is, at least, kind of gauche.

I'm a little skeptical of the neon lighting - feels like back-pasting modern 'cyberpunk-as-80s-retrofuture' onto a much mangier aesthetically progressive text. Has been a while since I read it, tho.

At very least people ought to try approaching their default assumptions about it. Listening to albums with offputting cover art is expanding for the soul

I'm not so Jaded about it - it's fun to play with, & the idea that a given culture (or subculture) would have an Aesthetic of Quality seems pretty innate - but the conflation of earning w. 'correct creative decisions' is a very money-art intersection problem.

It's 100% true, and almost always has been. I think often about 'Aesthetics of Value' - 1 million pretty decent instagram photographers constantly soft-pitching themselves in every photo for magazine editorial aesthetics, indie musicians exclusively releasing on Spotify because big artists do, etc.
