I am a molecular paleo-ecologist. Interested in good science, especially genetic studies. I tweet about science mostly.
The #Globe_institute PhD retreat kicks off this morning. 2-day workshop/retreat talking and discussing #PhDlife and interaction with the institutes PhD supervisors.

Today we are continuing into the microbial space at the PhD course in Ancient environmental genomics. With Antonio Fernandez Guerra and @menendezserra! 🦠🧬📉📈.

The PhD course in Ancient environmental Genomics runs at full speed, yesterday was great phylogenetic placement and genome analysis from ancient metagenomes! With a series of cool hands-on exercises🤲 by @miwipe81, @nicola_alexa_, @PalaeoPete and @melanoidin. @Globe_UCPH 🧵

I believe the september issue of Molecular Biology and Evolution @MolBioEvol will be a very interesting and revealing one. Not only did @EnRose89 make this beautiful cover but she is also first author on the study about the loss of population diversity in black rhinoceros.

Going to the @SedimentaryDNA society meeting is appareantly not easy! But I will get there, don’t worry!
November 23, 2024 at 5:47 AM
David Orton opening the final wrap up meeting of the @SeaChangesITN. It is going to be an interesting couple of days with the ESRs presenting their cool results! Including a bunch of invited speakers.

@BZaiken, is an amazing artist, and she helped us depict this lost world! Including the key taxa we up there!

We broke the world record in ancient DNA today! 2-million-year-old DNA from plants and animals were retrieved from geological deposits and show that North Greenland was once home to an open boreal/arctic community incl. mastodon. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05453-y...

I was @Nature yesterday for a press conference together with @khkjaer @nicolajklarsen @KarinaKSand @biancadesanctis and Eske Willerslev. What a fantastic experience, thank you! And now can't wait to see our paper out, in less than 2 hours from now. @Globe_UCPH @LFGeoGenetics

A molecular paleo-ecologists packing his/her suitcase, you know tomorrow will be a different day at the office and that clean underwear etc have not been prioritized! #ancientDNA #edna

Fellow Pleistocene nerds help me! I am interested in studies/data where fauna fossils have been directly dated as well as the stratum/sediments they were found in! Please retweet or tag people who might know!?! @DeepFriedDNA @zigthehuman @
November 23, 2024 at 6:51 AM
Today the @LASTJOURNEY5 continues with @zigthehuman, Rikai and myself. The Tequendama human remains have been prepared for down stream genetic, isotopic, age analysis. I am thrilled and exited! #peoplingoftheamazon

I just received a copy of this interesting book, from the author #DavidMeltzer who I consider my mentor. He has a fantastic way of addressing and thinking scientific questions and problems! Congratulations David, with this great book! #FirstPeoplesInAnewWorld

It surprisingly worked despite nit and louse samples being as small as they are + considering the sturdiness they possess after 2000 years in the dirt http://bit.ly/3EBwLL2. We had to continually come up with ideas to break them to retrieve the DNA embedded within.@UniReading
November 23, 2024 at 7:14 AM
Our new paper is out in @MolBioEvol, proof of concept finding that alternative sources such as louse, nits and the glue attaching these can be sources of ancient human genomes. Check it out its open to all http://bit.ly/3EBwLL2

Christmas came early this year @tommyhigham and @DeepFriedDNA!! @twitter any tricks on how to read two books at the same time!?

The La Lindosa rock art was really impressive, not just the heights and the sizes of the displays, but especially the details and complexity in what is expressed. Humans dancing, alone, some with animal features and symmetrical patterns all in one large composition…..
November 23, 2024 at 7:21 AM
And so sadly the @LastJourney field trip comes to an end! It has been incredibly to witness the amount of effort put into this by all the team members and mind blowing to be at Cerro Azul, see the rock art humans have been painting here for more than ten thousand years…

And now the journey with @LASTJOURNEY5 goes to to the famous archaeological site La Lindosa at the edge of the Amazon, which has hundreds of meters of rock paintings and thousands of years of history. But first an 8 hour bus ride, barely made it which is why my glasses misted.
November 23, 2024 at 7:29 AM
Today started a new journey in ⁦@LASTJOURNEY5⁩ project! Which will help us understand the human-environmental-megafauna interaction in the Bogota savanna.
November 23, 2024 at 7:29 AM
Booom!! And just as you were leaving for fieldwork reviews come back with major revisions.
November 23, 2024 at 7:29 AM
Seems like a loooong time since the field gear was actually going somewhere. Homeoffice now turned into gear package central! Om my way to Colombia with the @LASTJOURNEY5 project!!
