Yeah why should people be able to enjoy a hobby that previously had a self-sustaining market so they could still pay their bills? Fuck em, right? Necessities are all they deserve!

To quote this asshole I just saw being a dipshit online: “can you even hear yourself say this stuff out loud??”

FYI — people who do this are largely middle-class people. The margins are a few thousand dollars. It’s the same with comic books (I don’t know a lot about watches but I do know about that.) Collector markets for these kinds of things are aficionados with day jobs, not billionaires.

I try and keep my eye out for that. I’ve seen it plenty too. I haven’t seen it from her yet, but if I’ve missed it, I’m always willing to go look. No sacred cows, just good policy.

Well that’s definitely true. And she actually agrees it’s a fine idea to restrict kids’ phone use in school. What she’s pushing back on in that thread is the “smartphones are bad for kids’ brains,” messaging which is moral-panic junk science that’s being exploited by tech-bros pushing bad laws.

Sure! What would be the best way to do this?

I’m willing to be wrong about your stance here! I’m responding in the spirit that there might be dimensions of Taylor’s work that I’m unfamiliar with. But I’ve been keeping up with her work on Power User for a year now and she seems pretty consistent on this, and well-researched with good guests.

As someone whose opinion on most things I respect very much, my initial reaction to your take here is that it’s not based in Taylor’s actual positions, which is that basically that every single bill that’s been floated to “protect kids” from the internet is actually pro-surveillance-state panopticon

I don’t know why I’m tagged in this but it feels like a mistake

I wish I had the stones to sue my asshole school for the dumbass things they did when I was 13. I’d have made a lot of money. All power to Becky standing up against evil shit.

Is it Spider-Man?

I totally agree. We should change the laws so they have to pay more.

If I’m the first person to notice a bug why does some rando scientist who didn’t do any noticing get to name it? What the hell

TRUTH

Is this story even true? Well his own self-reported history is a tissue of exaggerations and lies so it’s impossible to tell. This is just a reminder that he’s a grifter, and to ignore everything he says the way you do your sad, sweaty coworker who can’t stop lying about what he did on the weekend.

This is just the latest in the decades-long history of Millar’s lies, scams and grifts. But possibly the most egregious because he cloaked himself in the righteous cause of supporting a vulnerable part of the industry, only to drop the concern the moment it benefitted him to tell a different story

…and today he announced that he was actually asked to do that very thing (by, in an unlikely twist, BOTH companies) but instead he decided to launch an online fundraiser for an original book that would be sold through Kickstarter and nowhere else, with all proceeds going to his own company.
