In June, we received a disturbing call from inside the privately-run South Louisiana ICE Processing Center, where a woman, two months pregnant, reported not receiving emergency medical care after she began experiencing abdominal pain and bleeding large blood clots.

“Medical care inside of detention facilities is insufficient in general. So, when we add in more specified procedures or medical care, that’s just completely inexistent,” said Diaz.

"We’re outraged that yet another life has needlessly been taken by the immigration detention system," said Amanda Díaz, Organizing Director with Freedom for Immigrants. "For decades, detention has been defined by ICE’s deadly medical neglect, resulting in premature and preventable deaths."

Freedom for Immigrants has long documented abuse of solitary in immigration detention. It's frequently used by officials inside immigration prisons as a means of coercion, retaliation, and medical abuse.

"CoreCivic must not be allowed to continue operating outside legal and ethical boundaries. We demand transparency, the enforcement of city and state laws, and the immediate closure of the CCCF. CoreCivic is subject to California laws and city laws, just as any other entity."

“CoreCivic’s operation of the California City Correctional Center is a direct threat to human rights, public safety, and the values we hold as Californians," said Amanda Díaz, Organizing Director with Freedom for Immigrants (FFI), in a statement demanding action from local officials.

CoreCivic also appears to be operating the facility in violation of state law, Senate Bill 29, which prohibits local governments from issuing building permits for privately-run immigration detention centers without first providing 180 days public notice and holding at least 2 public hearings.

City officials previously alerted CoreCivic that the city found serious safety concerns at the prison, including a failed fire department inspection, and that the facility could not legally operate in the city.

Mega prison corporation CoreCivic is detaining people in the custody of ICE and the U.S. Marshals Service at the prison despite its failure to comply with California law and obtain the required city permits.
