My family was in the “borrow my older brother’s paper route money to buy groceries some months” tax bracket around when I was born, but I remember being stunned as a kid when a friend’s parents waited until the kids finished eating to wash the plates and use them for their own meal.
i grew up poor, but not have nothing poor. and i had a life changing moment when i was shopping with a woman one day and her kid looked at her and said “momma we won’t have to share a spoon anymore”
