I think the Internet encourages both homogeneity and tribalism, so you're increasingly likely to either be in the mainstream or to be in something so niche that people have not heard of it.

Hyperpop is a great example of a modern subculture. furries have music, anime/video game culture has their music, there's a million genres that end with '-core', and all the old subcultures still exist. I do think it's a less prominent social phenomenon than it once was.

Those like Rick Beato who make money by exploiting people's inherent desire to complain that the youth of today Aren't Doing It Right should never be listened to. People care deeply about music and always have and always will. 4/4

If anything I see algorithmic feeds as a new tool in our toolbox to discover new music. You're now able to find a plethora of small artists in whatever weird niche your heart desires. 3/4

As for where people get new music, I like YouTube as there are lots of small artists there. Word of mouth (aka friends) is, as always, very common. The algorithmic discovery feeds are also popular, but I think you underestimate how much thought people put into the music received from them. 2/4

I don't think this is true. I'm an older gen z for context. Sure, some get songs from tiktok, but is that too different to listening to the radio? Not sure about where you live, but my city's live indie music culture thrives on those generations, and those are entirely new bands half the time! 1/4

I read it as Right Left Hand Foot for which I have no justification apart from reading too many drum stickings
