6) Rosa Parks wasn't meek. A lifelong believer in self defense, her politics were expansive. She loved Martin & Malcolm & Stokely, Ella Baker & Queen Mother Moore, fought for reparations, Black history in every curriculum, prisoner defense, welfare rights—"any move to show we are dissatisfied."

I grew up Jehovah's Witness so I don't have an answer for the first. Secular-wise though... the Jackson 5 rendition of Santa Claus is Coming to Town ALL DAY.
What is your favorite "Christian" Christmas song and what is your favorite "Secular" Christmas song?

I will probably always adore "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" for Christian.

And "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" for secular.

The whiplash between coming across niche reactionary ideologues on Substack and coming here is too much for me. Mix that with some YouTube theological apologia and it's a perfect digital storm.

Ta-Nehisi Coates asks Palestinian scholar & writer Tareq Baconi “what is it about this genocide particularly” that has changed us? Baconi, who has written extensively on Hamas & the history of Palestinian resistance, points to 3 factors. It’s happening in full view of the world, yet still allowed...

rage bait slop about a halal only microwave being from a Morocco based account is a good bit
Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

A reporter asks if Mamdani stands by calling Trump a fascist. Mamdani starts to give a delicate answer.

Trump (smiles, pats Mamdani's arm): "That's OK, you can just say yes. It's easier. I don't mind."

A Charlotte pastor said Border Patrol came into his church and made an arrest in front of children. They cried “a lot,” he said.

“We are trying to clean the property. We didn’t know this is gonna happen.”

American History II (Reconstruction-Modern Day) has me oscillating between hope & inspiration and utter dread about what's to come.

I'm really looking forward to reading Mr. Stoermer's work. I want to understand his critiques of American liberal nationalism more and maybe see if he has any opinions of a viable alternative.
Book's done. Goes to copyedit now. Out of my hands.

There's something in there to tick off just about anyone - at least if you rely on bad principles, bad politics, and bad history to get you through.

For everyone else: American resistance has a way, and that way has a history. This book is it.

The deadliest thing about Charlotte is driving in Charlotte.
Rep. Pat Harrigan: "I have asked Josh Stein, our governor, to consider working with President Trump to allow the National Guard to come into Charlotte ... use the National Guard as a force multiplier and they can a lot of load off the Charlotte PD."
