I couldn't understand the tears that had suddenly drenched my cheeks. Or why, when Tiran saw my face and put an arm around my shoulders to give me a quick reassuring squeeze, I had to choke back sobs. He didn't say anything else, just stood back against the railing across from me and smoked, waiting quietly till I managed to calm down.

It was an exciting time for me, at least at first. I enjoyed all the new people – the kids in my class, the teachers, the extended school community. In particular, I was curious about the girls my own age, who were in such short supply at home and consequently somewhat mysterious to me. The other students accepted me readily – everyone from jock to theatre kid was fascinated by my past and happy to include me in their social circle.

As we walked toward the water, I could see Jimmy on the main lawn with one of the outside workers, who was gesticulating forcefully at him. When Jimmy first told us he was going to be Tiran’s “property manager” it had sounded like a made-up position to us – how could it possibly be a full-time job to look after the land someone lived on? Back then we’d had no sense of the scale of Tiran’s estate, and poor Jimmy now seemed in way over his head. We barely saw him these days.
