Yeah my instructor found ways to make things accessible for beginners and I really appreciated that. They advocated for a very limited palette (the zorn palette with some extras) so you don’t have to buy a ton of colours.

Yeah I was taught to just repeatedly dip the used brush in any cheap oil and keep wiping off the pigment with a shop towel (they handle grease better than kitchen towels). When you get most of the pigment off just swirl the brushes in some dish soap and rinse them off.

I think a lot of discourse about rags soaked in oil paint spontaneously combusting is also overblown. Just use common sense like keeping the bin out of the sun, use a lid, keep your space clean and take out the trash often / don’t let it sit there etc.

You can just use the cheapest cooking oil to wipe off paint residue and regular dish soap to clean your brushes.

The only downside is spike lavender oil can be pRiCeY but a little goes a long way and if you’re painting small works around 8”x10” and not 6’x4’ stuff you’ll probably be fine!

I used to oil paint and I’ll gladly talk to you about it! You don’t have to use turpentine. If you don’t feel great about using odourless mineral spirits either because of a lack of ventilation you can try spike lavender oil which was used historically before turpentine.

I keep telling myself I want to be the kind of artist who just keeps going. Ideally I want my work to keep getting better and better to. I don’t want to peak at 25 and disappear.
