If a man charge a man with sorcery, and cannot prove it, he who is charged with sorcery shall go to the river, into the river he shall throw himself and if the river overcome him, his accuser shall take to himself his house (estate).

Got a bunch of extremely ancient rolls of film developed so I can start fresh and this one that must be from ~2013 shot on a camera with a severe light leak came out kind of cool.

When I was in grad school the academic job market was already awful and we'd discuss survival strategies. One such strategy was "Have a position so thoroughly refuted in the discipline that you're the only person who still espouses it - that way you're the [thing] guy and will always be notable."
Note to fellow journos: If only one "economist" agrees w Trump tariffs—as evidenced by fact that this particular "economist" is now being interviewed and cited everywhere as only "expert" willing to publicly defend them—consider confirming that he's actually an "economist." Check CVs, for example.

I suspect this is a HUGELY underestimated factor in radicalization. If you look at, say, QAnon boards, it’s not really folks looking for scapegoats for their dire material circumstances. It’s middle-class people with boring lives who want to imagine they’re in The Parallax View.
One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.
This isn’t some rant saying “Germany has learned nothing from its past” - the reality is more subtle than that. Middle-class Germans live and travel with an incredible amount of ease and comfort, and they just got…sleepy. Many of them dismissed the far-right’s rage as just another set of complaints.

I used to think it was like a funny joke in The Sims that in their fictional world you improve your "Charisma" score by going up to a mirror and practicing Hitler gestures but people apparently are trying to apply this technique IRL.
i dont know if people are catching it but uh… the destiny in the gutter comment is another napoleon allusion

Tea Party organizers wrote guides distributed through Google Groups on how exactly to interrupt town halls and get irate. It only took a few people acting inappropriately to get the crowd moving. They moved clips quickly to outlets. These people were coached and encouraged and eventually funded!

Not really convinced this will hold but one thing's for sure: it would be very, very funny.

Someone IRL with Fox Mulder's views and habits and professional situation today IRL would be such a complete intolerable asshole that you have to conclude that he as a character basically has the disposition of a saint.
In light of Breaking Bad guy wanting a return to genuinely admirable protagonists, what is your favorite example of one? I’d argue Picard from TNG is a really strong example in that he isn’t infallible but is unrelentingly concerned with the moral costs of decisions and the power placed in his hands

It's seems insane that you can run out of matches. Once you buy one of those huge boxes of matches you should have infinite matches, or at least a non-zero chance of finding a match lying around if you look hard enough.

I don't know how accurate this is but it does make me want to revisit some Weber.
favorite examples of this is from weber talking about how limited absolute monarchies are in the face of the bureaucracies they construct

Before we do anything rash like decide between charging 40$ or 50$ in shipping fees on a 10,000$ order, let's make sure we all say every possible permutation of every possible grammatical sentence of English about this topic.

No shade on Rick P. but I think having Nixon as the initial lens through which I encountered the set of mental reflexes driving American conservatism mislead me into thinking there was a lot more interesting neurotic complexity going on at the top than there usually is.
My father got to have Richard Nixon as an enemy. A shithead, but a figure that could be dissected and maybe understood in his own way. We all get failed influencer rich kids who are mad they can't say slurs. God, just give me an interesting enemy.

When people tell me my posture is weird I've been saying "That's what they told Glenn Gould and look what he accomplished." But I've noticed that lately I've been getting a lot of shooting pains in my back so I looked it up and apparently he wound up with debilitating spinal issues. So what the fuck
