Born in Berkeley. YIMBY. Cars ruin cities.

Also, too, Jackal.
No, it wasn't in the street. The Chess Club saga was a proxy for People's Park defenders.

Got it. Brent Targaryen it is.

It's a consistent world view. Not correct, obviously, but consistent. My parents got me Effective Cycling when I got my first 10-speed and it made perfect sense to 13 yo me. I'm not surprised there are plenty of GenXers who haven't updated their thinking. It took me a long time.

I'm partial to filthy, treasonous, and criminal.

Not the main point, but I'm pretty sure the Greeks didn't recite the Iliad (or the Odyssey) at 1.25x speed.

Sure, if it's the only option, they will. But that doesn't make it a *good* option. It makes it the only option.

They're saying it doesn't work *well.* It works fine in places with frequent transit, which is not most places (in North America).

It's a perfectly valid point.

They use like 1% of the metals that cars do.

And pedal assist is still decent exercise. Every day I replace a 20-minute round trip car commute with a 30-minute round trip ebike commute. That's 30 minutes of light/medium exercise per day that I wasn't doing before. That adds up.

In 1980, according to my Dad, my grandmother thought Ronald Reagan seemed like a "nice young man"

I mean, the bike lane in Oakland is a doorzonepalooza, too.

I hope you're right, but (getting back to your original point) cities/states/provinces need to get on it NOW and make sure they don't succeed on that.

What I really worry about is that the auto companies will continue to entrench individual car ownership rather than embrace the robotaxi model. "When people no longer own cars" is the ideal, but the car companies will fight tooth and nail to prevent it.

Reece is absolutely correct that cities (states/provinces) need to get out ahead of this stuff or we'll have another century of destruction via automobile.

There should be ONE setting for AVs: scrupulously obeys the law.
