I’ve recently discovered my local library. We may be a small city library but it feels *so* good to walk in and see familiar anthro texts on the shelves.

If you have published a book within the last 12 months (library rules), let me know and I will make it my mission to see that it’s acquired! ✨

Twenty years later, Guantánamo is everywhere. The lawless and ongoing administration of the prison there has metastasized throughout U.S. legal and political culture and underwrites the broader democratic crisis we face today.

Unrestricted Citizenship by birth on our soil separates the United States from most other countries outside of our hemisphere. Emancipated people pushed for this because African-descended people whose ancestors were forced here for labor were not considered citizens of the country of their birth

All that the media repeats are phrases that relate California’s wildfires to a “war zone.” The ironies are heartbreaking. From G*za to California, climate and development are at the crux of suffering and devastation. Today I feel a profound sense of loss, defeat and hopelessness.

“Since 1993 almost half of California’s new homes have been built in fire hazard areas. Yet, as a contemporary Galileo might say of defensible space, ‘still it burns.’“
Mike Davis in 1998: "Two kinds of Californians will continue to live with fire: those who can afford (with indirect public subsidies) to rebuild and those who can’t afford to live anywhere else." longreads.com/2018/12/04/t...
The Case for Letting Malibu Burn - Longreads
Many of California's native ecosystems evolved to burn. Modern fire suppression creates fuels that lead to catastrophic fires. So why do people insist on rebuilding in the firebelt?

If you're like me & are currently finalizing your syllabus, you should add this book to your course. Really.

My students & I had the opportunity to read a final draft, and it’s SO GOOD!
It sparked thoughtful, thought-provoking conversations. Plus, it’s open access!

This confirms worries that the new Trump admin might empower the corrupt forces opposed to #Guatemala’s elected president. The Florida Republican Party has invited the attorney-general, currently banned from entering the US due to “significant corruption,” to attend inaugural events:
Fiscal General fue invitada a evento republicano en EE. UU., pero MP no aclara si puede viajar a ese país
