unlike new zealand PR which is just a visa type, Canadian PR has a physical card associated with it, which if you don't have you need to apply for special permission to enter the country. I imagine they wouldn't deny me entry as a tourist if I showed up from NZ with my canadian family, but who knows

this one is a truly weird expat one tbh. I'm not Canadian, immediate family is, we lived in Canada during COVID when I got Canadian permanent residency (I "joined family" there ???). so now I have PR and need to maintain it in order to enter Canada, despite our living in new zealand. go figure

tonight's unexpected expat tax: a couple hours to compile a record of my whereabouts for the last 5 years, for the Canadian government, despite our not living in Canada anymore. smdh

In both US and CA you can't be denied entry if you are a citizen, but it can be a pain if you haven't got the corresponding passport with you
December 7, 2025 at 1:49 AM
Unfortunately American and Canadian law requires entry to those countries on those passports for dual citizens

catastrophe / opportunity

the ultimate expat parental joy is the endless series of expiry and renewal across multiple passports, visas, permanent residencies. there's some universal law that they can't ever line up, so somebody's something is always in the process of renewal (usually for like $200)

Welcome to team "the kids have too many passports"

It's sort of a joke in our house because all the other trad gender roles are reversed lol

In many cases yes

It's easily 10x the rate of "dada" in our house. What the hell? I'm right here guys

Is this an underestimate? Only science can tell us
December 6, 2025 at 10:45 PM
lol it occurs to me that this thread also provides a decent sample of fabrics, textures, surfaces from my house

11. SHAMANISM - THE TIMELESS RELIGION (Manvir Singh). engaging stories from Manvir's fieldwork interweaved with anthropological science on healing, religious experience, etc. Manvir and I were pals at harvard and collab'd on music stuff but this research is largely new for me. Read eagerly; had fun.

it's like when they sold twitter to elmo, the science twitter community was cleaved into two groups: the promoters, and the people who tweet for fun and community

I logged back into twitter for the first time in months and was struck to find that most of the academics who are still on there (or at least most of those I used to follow) basically use social media entirely for self-promotion. hmm
