Check out these tiny, ghostly-pale woodlice I found under a log in our Norfolk garden. Known (appropriately) as Ant Woodlice, they live underground with various species of ants and eat the colony's debris and detritus. Apparently, they're blind. #invertebrate #woodlouse @norfolknats.bsky.social

We're finding lots of Spear Thistle Lacebugs in the garden this year. The adults are easy to overlook, being only a few millimetres long.

The Indian Tortoiseshell is reminiscent of Europe's Small Tortoiseshell -- but redder. We spotted this one near a gorgeous waterfall in southern Bhutan. #butterfly #Bhutan #FieldGuidesBirdingTours

This Crested Bunting was singing his heart out from a telephone wire over a scruffy agricultural field near Punakha, Bhutan a few weeks ago. And a lovely song it was! #birds #Bhutan #FieldGuidesBirdingTours

Just back from a fab trip to Bhutan, where we saw many beautiful things, including this stunning Paris Peacock, which had iridescent scales that glittered like a starry night. They're found primarily in moist evergreen forest. #butterfly #Bhutan #FieldGuidesBirdingTours

A tiny Vervain Hummingbird on her nest. I love how she's decorated it with bits of lichen to help camouflage it. #birds #Jamaica #FieldGuidesBirdingTours

The Jamaican Tody must surely rank as one of the world's cutest birds -- barely bigger than a ping pong (table tennis) ball but oh so feisty! We had some wonderful views of this one today. #birds #Jamaica #FieldGuidesBirdingTours

The enigmatic Crested Quail-Dove, known locally as the "Mountain Witch", is one of the most challenging of Jamaica's endemic birds to find, so we were delighted to get good long looks at this one in the Blue Mountains today. #birds #Jamaica #FieldGuidesBirdingTours

White-throated Magpie-jays sport some seriously curly topknots. We found these two -- and four of their flock mates -- near Lago Arenal. #birds #FieldGuidesBirdingTours #CostaRica

When it comes to snazzy raptors, the White Hawk surely has to be near the top of the list. What a beauty! #birds #FieldGuides #CostaRica

This gorgeous Lesson's Motmot was checking out fruits at the Wilson Botanical Gardens on my recent tour there. #FieldGuides #birds #CostaRica

Perhaps a cure for the winter blues -- the gorgeous tones of a Speckled Tanager (with two White-throated Tanagers in the foreground) seen munching on seeds at a feeding station in El Copal, a private reserve in Costa Rica, during a recent tour. #FieldGuides #CostaRica #birds #tanagers

Is it a bad sign when moss is growing -- quite extensively -- on your car? Asking for a friend! 🤣 We're growing Silvery Bryum aka Bryum argenteum.

Are they eyebrows or ears? When it comes to the Crested Owl's appendages, it's kinda hard to tell! #birds #owls #CostaRica #FieldGuides

Somehow, Brown-throated Three-toed Sloths always look like they're smiling. #sloth #CostaRica #FieldGuides

There are some truly handsome birds here in Costa Rica, like this Collared Araçari. #birds #CostaRica #FieldGuides

A nice start with a miraculously dry day up Volcán Irazu. The predicted deluge fortunately never happened! Tropical Screech-Owl, Volcano Junco and Resplendent Quetzal.

The current situation -- gearing up for my next tour, meeting the group in an hour... It's looking lovely and lush out there! Grounds of the Hotel Bougainvillea, Costa Rica.

These plus a new UV torch! Can't wait to get out there looking! Thanks @anaturalistabroad.bsky.social! 😁

Some excellent spotting by @ians4ad.bsky.social yesterday gave me my life look at the ridiculously named Bowl Hoodie (Calyptella capula), an adorably tiny fungus. It was growing on a decaying Common Nettle stem. There were only two other records for the UK on iNaturalist!

There were few lichens in the heavily fertilised agricultural areas we were surveying today, so this trunk covered in Ramalina farinacea was a nice surprise.

A Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl from last month's trip to Sri Lanka. What a magnificent beastie!

Another photo from the garden last summer, potentially of another new species for the property. @robyaxley.bsky.social and @aspenecology.com, is this Punctilia jeckeri, with its frilly hem?
December 9, 2024 at 1:21 PM
Pretty sure this is Arthonia radiata, found on a branch back in July. If so it's a first for the garden! @robyaxley.bsky.social and @aspenecology.com, what do you think?
