We're 38! In 1987 Merck & Co., Inc. announced the historic donation of Mectizan to end river blindness (LF was added in 1998). Today more than 5 billion treatments have been donated…and counting. Millions of people are no longer at risk. #StampOutOncho #EliminateLF #beatNTDs 📸 Julio Johnson

The countries eligible for Mectizan are Angola, Bénin, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad ,Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sénégal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Venezuela, and Yemen. The countries where elimination of transmission of river blindness has been achieved are Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Niger.

Text reads Thank you President Carter. Longtime champion of the campaign to end river blindness and lymphatic filariasis. There are four photos. in the first, a staff member of The Carter Center distributes Mectizan for elimination of river blindness in Guatemala. In the second, President Carter and Dr. Roy Vagelos, the Merck & Co., Inc. CEO who decided to donate Mectizan, talk with villagers in Chad in 1994 when The Carter Center added river blindness elimination to its health programs. The third photo depicts the iconic "Sightless among Miracles" river blindness statue on the grounds of The Carter Center in Atlanta. The fourth photo was taken in 2013 of President Carter and President Juan Manuel Santos as they celebrated the elimination of river blindness in Colombia. Colombia was the first country to achieve this milestone.
