Military historians get incredible empirical data for their analysis of the horse and musket era of warfare because gun clubs field companies to compete in tournaments where the objective is to maximize collective rate of fire in line in the style of 18th century infantry

mass recall of semiautomatic small arms followed by all the gun guys getting really into reproduction black powder muskets, creating a thriving industry and scene for historical reenactment and vintage recreational shooting, would actually be a really great outcome of our gun culture

The AR-15 absolutely would be the main small arm, though. It’s the AK-47 of this century.

OPA factions in the Expanse map uncannily well to DSA caucuses so you can literally do a find and replace

(not graphic but I couldn't find a spoiler tag - end of S2 spoilers)

“Luxury bigotry” is such a great way to attack it, too. “Luxury bigots” should be our “limousine liberals”

Yeah like if that was the idea (and I think it’s reasonable to think that it was) then ok just don’t respond with genocide and it won’t work!

What do you think it would take to feed Coruscant and what do you think is the closest to an ecumenopolis Earth could be as a single planet civilization

Another thing that rules about the Matrix is how even the straight human characters are queer

It would be an interesting social experiment to find out how many Canadians and Mexicans and Taiwanese people and Europeans and Arabs and South Americans would be interested in purchasing Portuguese porter from American expatriates, in a hypothetical work of fan fiction.

If they had been of the same quality but rehashes (a good but flawed reloaded and a bad but similar revolutions) people would feel better about them and there would have been more sequels, both for the worse.

Those movies are underrated. They were hated because they were so, so hyped since the first Matrix is perfect and was incredibly popular.“The sequels made me hate the first one.” Closest recent analogue is Game of Thrones. The backlash is an example of how people don’t tolerate innovative missteps.

Patrick H Willems showed how you could preserve all these great things while addressing the structure, just with a few rounds of thoughtful script notes. He is also (correctly) very positive about the Wachowskis as artists and what they were trying to do. m.youtube.com/watch?v=aqhh...

It’s absolutely incredible! It’s flawed, but it’s so bold and ambitious and the setpieces are magnificent. It builds the world in ways few sequels do. Revolutions is a mess but could have been fixed.

Thinking about this again, how one interpretation of mass demonstrations in 19th/20th century was that they were a show of force for the kind of mass warfare that characterized the age. In that sense, this encounter and others like it, more than the mass street marches, are serving that function.

the birthright clause was not just written to wipe dred scott off of the books, it was written to repudiate the *idea* behind dred scott, you might say the larger *ideological project* of dred scott. and the whole of section 1 of the 14th amendment is a constitutional statement of political equality

If I were helping a game developer brainstorm an open world game set during such a fictional scenario, the hidden stores of ammunition and small arms that the player might find to replenish their supplies would be called Fudd Caches. That's what those CHUD gun collections would be.
