finally finished Hinterland by Phil Neel but one section seems so exact for what this moment holds it hurt to read:
HINTERLAND Violence plays a central role here, since many of these individuals are active in the suppression of the surplus population in the near hinterland—the exurb bordering newly impoverished, diverse inner-ring suburbs where immigrants settle in large numbers alongside those forced out of the urban core by skyrocketing rents. This reactionary politics is simply the idea that the regular violence used by the status quo in its maintenance of the present world of police, prisons, and poverty might also be widened, aimed at the urban core itself and the soft-handed liberals made to suffer. The world can be restored into the hands of the barbarians through salvific acts of violence, capable of forcing the collapse and hastening the approach of the True Community. It is in this way that the far right in the u.s., as elsewhere, is an essentially terroristic force, and will almost always target the innocent, the weak, and the dispossessed in its exercise of power. Behind the call to "start the world" lies a desire simply to watch it all collapse, to force the world to burn, and everyone to burn with it.

striking how this passage from “We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance in the Mississippi Freedom Movement” by Akinyele Omowale Umoja feels to this moment of those who fight against a tyrannical and violent government have services and goods taken away from them.
"Local People Carry the Day" and guests to conceal themselves, with firearms, in the cotton fields and shrubbery near the farm that evening. COFO workers Margaret Block and Tina Lawrence assisted Janie Brewer inside the kitchen preparing gasoline bombs—Molotov cocktails—in anticipation of White supremacist attackers that evening. Block remembered, The night we were making those Molotov cocktails, we had a lot of bot-tles. And Mrs. Brewer was in the kitchen trying to pour the gas in the bottles ... and was spilling gas all everywhere. And I'm like "Damn if we get burned up in here, everyone was going to swear the Klan did it. It's going to be Ms. Brewer blowing us up. 85 Sheriff Dogan returned that evening with a truckload of local Whites. Dogan and his associates did not notice members of the Brewer family, another local resident, Mangrum, and Brown concealed near and around the farm with rifles and shotguns. According to Block, By the time we let them get not halfway to the house, somebody got up and shined a great big ole flood light on them and shot up in the air. We were going to let them get closer to the house so we were going to set them on fire... When we shot... up in the air they got out of there." Mrs. Brewer came out of the house ready to hurl a Molotov cocktail at the nightriders. Ed Brown, who was armed with a 30.06 rifle in the perimeter of the house, remembered Fred Mangrum revealing himself to Sheriff Dogan and the nightriders. Mangrum came forward to negotiate and prevent a shootout. He proclaimed to the sheriff, "Y'all back out here where we live. We ain't out there in Charleston." Realizing he was in a trap, Sheriff Dogan ordered his team to "get on out of here, everybody back in their car. The Tallahatchie County road crew came to Swan Lake two days later and destroyed the gravel road leading to the Brewer farm as punishment for this act of resistance. Nightriders never returned to the Brewer farm again after the evening of August 11

As someone who spends a lot of time in MSP, it’s patently absurd to say that immigrants are taking over when it’s near impossible to find a restaurant that doesn’t have burgers as a main menu category. Secondly, this is racist scapegoating nonsense meant to instill fear with the help of the media.

Orlin said their dream was to make sure Camila lived. According to Lucia, Camila was only 52 days old when she and Orlin carried her across Mexico's border with Texas. Lucia had given birth to two daughters before Camila, but they'd both died - one as a toddler and the other as an infant — of respiratory complications that the couple associated with air pollution from the cement factory in their town, Piedras Azules, where Orlin worked. They'd taken the second child to Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, for specialized care. When she died, they lost faith in Honduras' healthcare system. Lucia said they would never have come to the United States if she hadn't had Camila. But once she was born, they couldn't imagine enduring the death of another child.
