'The medics are forced to create a new acronym for them. WCNSF - wounded child, no surviving family.'

I am so shaken by this book.

I’m reading The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For… Alison Bechdel. This is from 1987…

ALIYA AND THE SHOP OF SECOND CHANCES, by Egyptian author Laila Rifaat, is out today (with a stunning cover by Gaia Alessi).

It's the One Thousand and One Fantastical Ideas! Magic carpet rides, time travel, genies, sphinxes and much, much more... Well done, @lailarifaat.bsky.social! #booksky

And yes, they've pirated my first children's novel The Sky Over Rebecca. And Meta have used it to train AI...

Took the quiz, got the recommendation and... I've already read it.

And that’s it for this year. No more writing until 2025.

In 2024 I wrote 3 drafts of a MG sci-fi novel (50,000 words), one draft of another MG sci-fi (40,000 words) and the first draft of a comic novel for adults (55,000 words). I’m feeling a little frazzled right now. Happy holidays one and all!

I keep forgetting alt text... But I've found there's a setting you can turn on to prompt you to write the alt text before posting - problem solved. That'll never happen again.

I also re-read this treasure this year… forty or so years after I first read it. The first book I ever read about the nuts and bolts of filmmaking – and still fascinating.

I ended up wishing there was a book like this for every movie. #scriptsky

(1978! Re-issued as Spielberg, Truffaut and Me.)

And here's the book that got me into screenwriting.

The published screenplay for the BBC TV drama Edge of Darkness by Troy Kennedy Martin - who also wrote The Italian Job and Kelly's Heroes. #scriptsky

Re-reading the 1980s...

Edmund White's A Boy's Own Story and its sequels.

Essential reading for this teenage boy. Had I read anything remotely like it before? I don't think so.

A door opened; some things started to make sense.

Some examples of Izzy Burton's wonderful cover art for my children's book The Lovely Dark - which I've just heard is going to be published in 🇺🇸 by Union Square!

I don't think Izzy is here yet, but her art is really something special. You can find her at: www.instagram.com/izzyburtonart/

Yes, it's true - this little book I wrote for my daughter to read in a few short years really is shortlisted in the Barnes & Noble Children's Book Awards.

Voted for by the booksellers themselves!

Amazing. Thank you. We find out this month who's won (not me, but I'm very proud). X

A big moment for me today, visiting my old school St Johns Marlborough to talk about my books #theskyoverrebecca and #thelovelydark!

I had a great time fielding questions from Year 8 pupils and speaking more informally with a Year 9 reading group. I will be back with my next book!

Thank you, Paul Auster. RIP.

And thanks Aaron Hicklin for giving me Auster’s Hand to Mouth at a key moment in my life...

Thank you Stockholm International School for a wonderful morning talking to more than a hundred SUPER-SMART pupils from Grades 4 and 5. I met lots of very eager readers (and future writers?) and they asked some very tough questions. I want to come back with my next book!

A little book I wrote for my daughter five years ago has now been published in 🇺🇸 - and it's on the shortlist for the @barnesandnoble.bsky.social Children's Book Awards!

Thank you to all the B&N booksellers across the nation who voted for THE SKY OVER REBECCA!

I'm delighted to be teaching Writing Children’s Fiction at Marlborough College Summer School this summer!

It’s a week long, very relaxed course – five morning sessions, leaving the students time to work on their novels in the afternoons. Sign up here: summerschool.co.uk/adult-course...

It's been very quiet in terms of press coverage for my second novel so I'm especially happy that THE LOVELY DARK has been selected as one of the Financial Times Books of the Year!

Thank you so much to author James Lovegrove, who chose the children’s books this year.

My first book, THE SKY OVER REBECCA, is out in 🇺🇸 and 🇨🇦 on November 14th from Union Square & Co.

Hand on heart, it's a dream come true for me.

And YES!! I'm hoping the starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Booklist mean we can finally sell a few copies!

WONDERFUL, funny Q&A with old friends in the English Bookshop, Stockholm yesterday, talking about my new paperback THE LOVELY DARK.

The award for Best Question of the Night goes to my daughter Kay: ‘Can I have more crisps?’

Many thanks to Veronica, bookshop manager, who has read the book twice!
