I am a Scouting America Communication Merit Badge counselor, where scouts are required to learn this skill as a fundamental. I know we made news recently because Hegseth claimed we’re “too woke”, but these skills are incredibly valuable in all fields they choose to enter.

so you think serving up slop to humans is acceptable? because you're not exactly making a compelling argument here.

Right, as those are also choices they are making, which show standards of integrity.

Why are you defending AI so vigorously when better, ethical alternatives exist & have existed for years?

Your whole argument boils down to “it’s okay to choose the unethical option if the situation is low stakes” but honestly, that’s worse, bc then there’s NO justification for the unethical choice

I was a Cubmaster for one that wasn’t religiously affiliated. We had nondenominational individuals who wanted their kids active outdoors, but weren’t tied to a specific belief system. I have taught respect for other religious beliefs without pushing any beliefs. I encouraged parents to teach their

No. It’s theft. It utilizes excessive amounts of electricity and water for inferior products.

You are opposed to Comic Sands?

The tools they use may actually be a key inference for their actual actions. You are making a key point, but not in the way you’d meant to, I suppose.

But it jut shows how wrong you are. Comic sans is a fine choice for certain reasons. bsky.app/profile/mars...
💯 Comic sans has been used by me in a scout flier because some kindergarten through second grade parents and their kids respond to it. I didn’t use AI for the flier, because it doesn’t rise to the level of comic sans script. 🤷‍♀️

I don’t care about that. It has to be legible. I wouldn’t recommend it for a figure in a scientific paper, but have used it myself for a cub scout flier. The uses are different. I’m not sure AI (or apparently you) know that, apparently.

These are valuable skills regardless of what job you embody (as is taught in our graduate school and Scouting communication skills). Replacing your own ideas and creativity with AI slop for mediocre cheats isn’t worth it at this time. 🤷‍♀️💯

Teaching them how to use those programs rather than rely on slop based on stolen work may be a hill I stand on just because I think it is valuable for my students, scouts, and children to learn from. It also teaches them valuable communication skills and competency domains.

Oh yeah, I did flyers for our PTO and my standards are WAY higher than that. Also, the kids will see it and judge you HARD.

I’ve also been a scout leader for years on really dismal budgets (I spend my own money towards much of it), and I have still made flyers, notices, etc. via my own skills. My three children (two of them Eagle Scouts, and the youngest not quite a teenager) similarly make their programs/fliers/etc.

If you don’t have those budgets, you have a few options; AI often produces slop that we wouldn’t accept from a skilled human taking images for publication or producing other work. Since it is not producing quality work, I don’t use it or have my students using it either.

Here are a few examples of figures not drawn by AI, that were still published.

As one of those “shoestring budget” labs, I’ve still had several figures drawn by me in PowerPoint or Adobe Illustrator that were selected as issue covers. They don’t need AI slop to be published.
