Among many other things, Frederick Douglass was one of the very first important theorists of photography, a fact that historians have been exploring for a couple decades — and that the white photography world continues to largely ignore. Here's an intro. www.nps.gov/articles/000...

It is AMAZING to the play the trumpet the way he contines to play at 80.

Two-and-a-half years later in the fall of 1968, Randy was on the road with Horace Silver. Here's a taste: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOr7...

I wish I could find this track ("Wrap Your Trouble In Dreams") online somewhere but, alas, I have had no luck. Not only would it be great to hear Randy but also a young Jan Hammer (18), George Mraz (21).

Of those 834 sessions, the first is pictured below: At 20, Randy is on one track from a recording documeting an international jazz competition held on May 24, 1966. He apparently came in second in the trumpet category, narrowly beaten out by the 24-year-old Franco Ambrosetti.

There's nothing in contemporary music that he can't do, but what is truly unique is less the versaility to blend into any context but the creativity to project his own personality no matter what the style or requirements. A longtime fave: Lieb/Beirach/Tusa/Foster www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om-3...

Randy is one of the most recorded horn players of our age. The Tom Lord Jazz Discography lists 834 sessions across every conceivable idiom falling under the umbrella of jazz. And that doesn't include the rock, pop, soul, R&B dates and commercial jingles that surely number in the thousands.

Thanks! I met Gates in Detroit at a fancy preview event for his Great Migration film. Just a 45-second conversation in passing, but he asked If I would send him a copy of my book, which I did. I also sent a link to the film. He emailed a warm thank you note, but I don't know if he watched the film.

Don't worry -- I'll be reminding everyone plenty about the film before and after ther premiere date!

I don't know the answer to that question, but I will look into it. If the answer is "not yet," I know our distributor is working on it.

Wow. Don't see many reviews like that. I happen to agree with him. Congrats to all involved.
