In AmLit we’re studying legacy and the way people who have immigrated to America engage with cultural heritage and memory. We read @markdoesstuff.bsky.social’s ‘No Me Dejas’ and my students, who’ve read a hundred different texts this year, were INVOLVED. Teach it! slate.com/technology/2...

My 1st @markdoesstuff.bsky.social of the year! They do such an amazing job of writing grief, and showing that it can be a long process. (I know I will probably be walking into the kitchen looking for Baby Kitty forever!) Also, it’s just a good, creepy story that highlights the strength of family!

Gen ai is poisoning our power grid, stealing intellectual property, using precious water, and ruining the internet with unreliable information and garbage imagery. Don't use it, and don't normalize it, even for laughs.

FWIW: I genuinely & firmly believe that Palestine is one of very few instances where Posting About It actually makes a material difference (because of Palestine Exception bullshit, ironclad media silencing of Palestinian voices, & the COST of speaking up), so if you haven't? Maybe consider it?
Just one of several moments in the last 14 months where I wonder whether this is when ostensibly progressive people in my life confront their indoctrination & experience the soul-shaking horror of their own mealy-mouthed complicity
Amnesty International concludes Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza
Amnesty International’s research has found sufficient basis to conclude that Israel has committed and is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip.

this is an open letter to publishers from @authorsabb.bsky.social. it should give you an idea of what authors are currently up against in the united states, especially those who are making books that contain marginalized characters (even and especially if those "characters" are ourselves).

Hi, one of the best things I’ve read all year. 👽
‘They discussed replacing her but saw at once that it was impossible: her upper lip, for one, and the light in her eyes. So then the show becomes about something else: what if a woman were irreplaceable?’

@tricialockwood.bsky.social on The X-Files:

It's almost like the IDF has a pattern of testing the waters on horrific actions, brushing them aside successfully on the world stage by promising an investigation, and then continuing to do the exact same horrific actions they pretended to investigate

It's almost like this is super predictable!
World Central Kitchen announces it is halting operations in Gaza after Israel targeted one of its vehicles in an airstrike, reportedly killing three WCK staff and then two rescue workers.

The IDF claims—without providing evidence—that one of the WCK workers was a “terrorist.”

Heart shattering to learn an Israeli drone has targeted and assassinated Mahmoud Almadhoun, one of the founders and chefs behind the Gaza Soup Kitchen.

What started as four pots and essential ingredients in Bait Lahia had grown into a remarkable effort to feed 3,000 people daily.

I know airports are already liminal spaces, but airports at 4:30am are another realm. A Muzak version of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” on a loop in the bathroom. Watched someone buy an iced coffee, down the whole thing in one go, then whisper, “Goddamn it.” Lawless place.
