The whole piece is sadly hilarious actually. Read it before it’s taken down

Heartening to see growing interest in these topics and thanks to @rte.ie allowing me a platform to educate the public about old Irish traditions:

President Higgins kindly provided us with the foreword for the book ‘See The Wood From The Trees’, which documents the story of storm felled trees felled from the Áras that he had gifted to be used by furniture design students @atu-ie.bsky.social

As so many are sharing memories of President Michael D Higgins as he departs Áras an Uachtaráin, here’s a selected highlight of my visit there in 2018 when he let us pet the dogs… 😍 he was a great president and will be missed

Amazing sunrise marking the start of the Celtic New Year on 1st November / Samhain, the Christian Feast of All Saints Day.

At Carrowmore megalithic site, Sligo, the chamber at Listoghill faces the Ballygawley Mountains & sunrise in this position coincides with the start and the end of winter.

Beautiful evening at the Bohea stone: the sky lit up and looked as if we might witness the ‘rolling sun’ phenomena, but the clouds gradually obscured the sun’s descent down Croagh Patrick.
Amazing Neolithic monument with 5,000 year old carvings. A great place to end National Heritage Week 🙌

Happy Big Lady Day! Today’s the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Traditionally called Big Lady Day in Ireland, it was a much loved day off from harvest work, people visited and socialised at Marian shrines and holy wells like this: Lady’s Well at Dunowen, Cork

Proof that this little beaut of a dolmen really does exist and is not confined to the realm of my imagination #amdrawing
Benbulben in the background looking fab and I did take artistic licence… go see all for yourself at Carrowmore in Sligo and if you do, please leave nothing behind #LeaveNoTrace

Fisherman’s cottage at Glencolmcille Folk Village. No electricity or running water. All meals cooked over the hearth. Complete darkness at night apart from the fire or lamp, & when they go out spiritual protection offered by statues, St Brigid’s crosses, and the power of prayers. #Donegal

Greetings from Downpatrick Head, where according to folklore the evil Crom Dubh met his demise, having been banished to Dún Briste by St Patrick 😀

Great to have this piece exclusively published on @atu-ie.bsky.social
website for ‘Yeats Day’ recently. The poet is associated with Sligo but here I write about his Galway home. Shows how it’s possible to have a foot in both counties at once 😉

Annual visit to the Bohea stone outside Westport. Covered in 5000 year old rock art, with view of Croagh Patrick, old beliefs may be associated with sun spectacle. More on summer solstice and ancient sun worship in my piece below 👇 @rtebrainstorm.bsky.social

Some headline in today’s Business Post…painful to see public money being spent in a way described as fiscally incontinent and yet our government is unwilling to invest comparatively paltry amounts for common sense projects such as reopening the railway from Sligo to Galway

Sick of all the AI in the ether, so am drawing more and more, mostly ancient stuff, like this dolmen in Sligo
