We are passionately hoping for more funding in the next framework programme (And have publicly called for doubling EU research funding)) to rectify this!

Valid point! The ERC Scientific Council is very well aware of this, but there are no fair measures that would prohibit this behavior without hurting justified applications or introducing tons of bureaucracy and red tape that nobody wants

many of them are! Several governments, national funders and private philantrophies gie grants tio the 'unfunded A' applications, or even all those who made it to the final interview!

We did think about this. 1. panels are able to judge folks according to career stage (normal at national funding orgs!). 2. people are compared in panels, i.e within same field, similar career trajectories. 3. longer career does NOT = better CV or better chance! our data on success rates show this.
