2000 Great Songs #1174: Rock Star. Hole's 1994 breakthrough LP seems a little lost to history, buried amongst the Courtney Love baggage. But it shreds throughout, as highlighted by this comically cathartic album-closer.

2000 Great Songs #1173: Bandit. One of Neil Young's few post-millennial tracks to meet the high standards set by his legendary 70s work, the tune transcends its context in an otherwise convoluted concept album, somber and captivating.

2000 Great Songs #1172: Blind Man's Penis. Long before AI could create fake music, you could send a check for $79.95 to some shady company advertising in a tabloid and they'd turn your insane stoner poem into a faux country song. So this guy did.

2000 Great Songs #1171: Santa Monica. The Everclear guilty pleasure sounds like everything I hated about 90s alt.rock, yet for some reason I kinda dig it. The rare song you can enjoy and still have zero interest in hearing anything else by the artist.

2000 Great Songs #1170: Rikki Don't Lose That Number. While I've only partially stepped back from my childhood disdain for Steely Dan, I've come to accept this song as inarguably enjoyable and comfortably nostalgic. (The rest, still not so much.)

2000 Great Songs #1169: Purr. Arguably @thesonicyouth.bsky.social's most straightforward rock & roll song, blazing hot & catchy as hell, still incorporating the band's trademark guitar wonkery but tethered to a rousing punked-up riff-rocker.

2000 Great Songs #1168: Blank Space. While the college radio music nerd within me still recoils instinctively from most mainstream pop music, I'll make an exception for Taylor Swift's 1989 LP. A good pop song is a good pop song.

New Releases: The latest from Sharp Pins is a fun one-man home-recording project, jangly lo-fi pop songs equally indebted to the British Invasion and Guided By Voices, raggedy yet full of catchy hooks.

2000 Great Songs #1167: America Is Waiting. Back in 1981, David Byrne & Brian Eno's experimental blending of electronic funk and found-sound samples was a little out there; today it feels almost normal, a wicked dance groove with a dose of weirdness.

2000 Great Songs #1166: Hitchin' A Ride. Back to the Guilty Pleasures file for this nugget of pure bubblegum, perfect AM radio pop from (mostly) one-hit-wonders Vanity Fare. Hear that recorder hook once, it's in your head for life.

2000 Great Songs #1165: Walk Away From Love. One of those new wave-era synth tracks that captures the vibe of my high school years. Yaz/Yazoo were the sort of band I wouldn't listen to on my own, but would invariably hear at parties; still bangs.

2000 Great Songs #1164: Comfortably Numb. Torn between "undeniably perfect song from an LP that was a huge part of my teenage years" and "so ground down by a half-century of classic rock radio that I rarely listen to it any more." Which gets you #1164.

2000 Great Songs #1163: Kim The Waitress. Mildly psychedelic jangle-pop opus from The Green Pajamas, later given some tougher alt.rock punch by Material Issue. As with most the Pajamas' work, it offers an intriguing blend of lust and magic.

2000 Great Songs #1162: Something In The Air. These days the Thunderclap Newman chestnut is worn down by classic rock & film soundtrack oversaturation; but it's still a magical late 60s gem when heard without the baggage.

2000 Great Songs #1161: Love Is. Barely 90 seconds, more than enough time for power pop act Myracle Brah to conjure mid-60s John Lennon in a raging swirl of rapid-fire Beatlesque abandon.

2000 Great Songs #1160: Brand New Love. A gorgeous/harrowing tale of love & its damage, whether heard in Sebadoh's original lo-fi acoustic recording, Superchunk's rousing punk-pop cover, or Sebadoh's own frenzied remake.

2000 Great Songs #1158: But I Like You. One of my favorite bands of the past decade, South Korea's Say Sue Me draw from post-shoegaze dream pop and 60s girl groups, here arriving at something hypnotically alluring yet relentlessly catchy.

2000 Great Songs #1157: Stoned Soul Picnic. I avoided singer-songwriter Laura Nyro growing up, finding her balladry didn't gel with my rock/punk sensibilities, but as my tastes have softened in middle age, I've come to love this track like an old friend.
