Looking across the Presbytery crossing vaults at Salisbury Cathedral from the clerestory. The scissor arches are older than those at Wells Cathedral and may well have been the inspiration for them. On the roof can be seen the 'ghosts' of the original C13 murals and their C19 update.

This is a fantastic reconstruction which has left many of us drooling with delight. If you'd like to know more about the original mosaic, see Jane Chick's fascinating study (to buy as a book or open access online).

#SarcophagusSaturday at the #BritishMuseum offers us this splendid stone #sarcophagus in #nenfro, a volcanic #tufo, with a lid like a pitched roof with a #sphinx at each end. The box itself has two figures on each side, male and female. It was once stuccoed and painted all over. #AncientBluesky 🏺

Another hilltop 360 for #HillfortsWednesday, this time from Mither Tap, Bennachie, Aberdeenshire, taken 2 weeks ago. I do declare that each Scottish hillfort I ascend is windier than the last, & this was definitely windier than Eildon Hill, which was pretty windy, tbf.
