“Why did you?” says Sylvain now, relaxing back into Ignatz’s touch. “Change your mind, about me.” He’d been desperate to be Ignatz’s friend, of course. He’d made such a fool of himself, in those first conversations, maybe just because of the desperation, or his fear that he had just absolutely nothing he could offer. “Hm.” Ignatz stops kneading at Sylvain’s shoulders and rubs gently at them instead. “I thought it was charming that you were nervous, I think. It intrigued me. I couldn’t understand why you might be so nervous. But then when we became friends, I…well, it’s just really special, being your friend. You have such a way of making people feel valued. At least, that’s how I always feel, around you.” “Oh,” says Sylvain. He’s not sure what to do with this new fact about himself. “You treat your friends really well,” says Ignatz, “I’m sure everyone thinks so.” He drapes his arms around Sylvain’s shoulders, slow but purposeful. After a second, he places a kiss on Sylvain’s head. “Though I hope they don’t think about you quite the way I do.” “Goddess forbid,” says Sylvain, “in-between all the shit I do and the shit they say, they’ve actually secretly fallen for me.” Ignatz kisses Sylvain’s temple and makes a sad little noise. Yeah, yeah. Sylvain knows it’s unattractive, to self-deprecate. “It’s okay,” says Sylvain. “I like you best.” Still hugging Sylvain, Ignatz says, “good. Because this makes me really happy.”

“Why would you want that?” says Sylvain. “Some asshole who doesn’t respect your feelings, breaks his promises, and can’t even properly fuck you.” “I thought that might be it,” says Ignatz, with just a slight amount of satisfaction. Fuck this stupid little man and his stupid little voice and his stupid little statements. “What?” Ignatz tilts his head. “Sylvain, do you think your only worth is sex?” Members of Ignatz’s forces respect him, because he’s got this clean style of giving orders, this kindness towards his troops, and of course, because he is known for being such an accurate archer that his he can end a fight in a single arrow. Sometimes it’s the kneecap, hindering an advancing bruiser; sometimes it’s directly through the throat. Either way, it’s what he’s known for — these critical, knockout blows that end a fight before it begins. Sylvain, though, is a petulant worm who loves to writhe his way through the mud and endure the pain and refuse to die. “I mean, I’m also terrifically wealthy. And I have a Crest, let’s not forget about that.”

Chapter 5 -- cruelly i am calling this applicable to the "Touch" prompt. in which Ignatz yearns, and Sylvain is a fear-biter.

“It means a lot to me,” says Ignatz, “to hear that you think this is working. I…” His hands form fists in the fabric of his pants and takes a deep breath. “Spending time with you is starting to feel like something I can count on. I…well, I…” Sylvain waits for him to come to a point, because silence doesn’t scare him, the way it once did. “I just want this,” says Ignatz. “Very much.” Wanting is something Sylvain is familiar with. Being wanted is an even more familiar feeling. He chuckles a little bit as he closes the distance to catch Ignatz in a kiss — a simple one. There’s immediately a pressure in Ignatz’s posture, a trembling that reminds Sylvain of the first time they kissed. I want you. Ignatz couldn’t be more apparent, as to what he’s asking for. If he were anyone else, frankly, a hot hour in a secluded corner would have already happened. But for every declaration of desire and every desperate kiss, there’s also some blockade between them and the bedroom. The only way Sylvain can describe the feeling is like…like Ignatz wants to push himself into going faster so badly that Sylvain feels responsible for slowing them down. And Sylvain in the bedroom is… Sylvain lets go of the plush heat of Ignatz’s lips and instead sets a kiss on his forehead. “Maybe we should…call it for today, okay?”

Chapter 4! a rather long halfway point, Ignatz taking courtship very seriously, Sylvain being extremely normal about that. funny enough i feel like this one's about wants & needs (a day 3 rarepair week prompt).

“Sylvain,” says Ignatz, as they walk back from the wyvern roost.. “Considering that especially these last few days, we’ve been spending so much time together, I…I’m wondering if…maybe you were okay with me saying we’re properly…um…if you’re okay with me saying that you’re my special someone.” He looks away, blushing. “R-really I think I want to know if I’m yours.” Sylvain knows this routine and its secret undercurrents. Don’t see other people — that’s really what he’s asking. Sylvain has been totally willing to promise exclusivity before, even if he didn’t mean it. “You’re the person I want to be going on dates with,” says Sylvain. “The only person, that is. So I guess, yeah?” What a lackluster declaration of affection, for him.

I’m trying to find a balance here, but I think maybe I’m being a little over-pushy now, aren’t I?” There’s a bolt of cruelty in Sylvain that wants to say yes, Ignatz is being pushy. Usually he’d snuff that voice out and sweet-talk his way out of an awkward moment like this. He’s already got a sugar-sweet sentence on the tip of his tongue. He wrangles that impulse, too. Somehow he gets the sense that trying to appease Ignatz will make everything worse. “What do you want to know about me?” says Sylvain softly. Ignatz bursts out: “Everything.” Sylvain squirms in his seat. How can Ignatz hand that much leverage over to someone else? He lets out a stiff laugh. “Everything, huh?” Sylvain’s heart throbs on his tongue. “Well, hey, I’m an open book. Ask what you want to know.” “Hmm,” says Ignatz. “What’s your favorite color?” Sylvain blinks at him. People have favorite colors? “Uh…I don’t think I have one?”

“It will,” said Claude, as if Leonie wasn’t being sarcastic. “She’s dramatic, but she’ll get the job done. You know that as well as I do.” He was completely right. Whenever she thought of Hilda these days, she thought of two people. There was the stylish, sugar-candy girl who spent an hour every day brushing out her hair and testing makeups, who followed Leonie around asking to play with her growing-out hair and wanting to test perfumes on Leonie’s wrist and throat until she found the perfect one. The scent she’d settled upon rested near-unused among Leonie’s possessions. Then there was the girl who had delivered the final blow to the Immaculate One, now months ago, but ever-so-crisp in all of their minds courtesy of the stories and lore that traveled around. Leonie had seen it, and still she remembered the details more like they were in the soldier stories: a blur of pink and black, a warrior climbing up the muzzle of the great beast and bringing her axe squarely down between the eyes. The silver-crimson ichor drenching over her tight black uniform, staining her face, her neck, the tops of her breasts. Leonie swallowed.
