Astarion was not a great lanceboard player, but he considered himself savvy enough to move pieces when he needed to. He examined his Queen, the piece he needed to secure his victory. Or was that the King? It did not matter the game nor the pieces nor the strategy of his competitors, he would win in the end. He would win her and then she could help him be free. He evaluated his opponents, far too many for his liking. First and least, there was Gale. More puppy than mage, he trotted behind her hoping she'd toss him a scrap of affection. He was handsome in a pathetic way. And no doubt he got cozy during their magic lessons. Astarion could tell enough from her body language when they'd walk back into camp that she was holding back from him. But could Gale wear her down with enough hearty stew? Lae'Zel was forward, and pretty in a terrifying way. A reliable sort. She certainly felt no shame in declaring her lust towards Azorah in front of everyone after they had killed that owlbear. Astarion found the display quite entertaining - especially when it seemed that Gale's eyes might pop out of his head and a blush would overtake his face. Azorah kindly turned her down. Astarion would have loved to watch that play out, but was glad another piece was off the table. Or was it a board? Trivial matters. No, no, by far his fiercest competition was Shadowheart. Dark and brooding (dangerous). Mysterious (withholding). Beautiful (really beautiful). It would appear that Azorah had a type. Shadowheart would flirt with Azorah while she healed the bite marks he had given her. A bard would invoke a metaphor about dogs and marking territory. Shadowheart seemed to revel in the complication and chaos almost as much as he did. Normally that would not be too much of a roadblock. Seducing two people would be only slightly more challenging than seducing one, at least for someone who had honed their skills as he had. Unfortunately, it seemed that Shadowheart did not seem to like him very much. All over a misunderstanding when he was simply investigating her belongings to see if anything could be useful to their group effort. She really was unreasonable. A team building exercise between the three of them seemed unlikely, and since Azorah had become the de facto leader of their merry band of misfits, pursuing someone else to hedge his bets might backfire. He could not afford to alienate his newfound powerful friends, and Gale.
