Its too long to quote in full here but that reminds me of Engels writing about metaphysics vs dialectics in Part II of Socialism: Utopian and Scientific. In a dialectical framework, its all about context and transformation instead of isolated theory and empirical observation.

Without theory you are lost. Its like Castro said, you are like a blindfolded man in a forest. Marxism Leninism is like a map and compass, if you understand how to use it and have experience using it, you have a much better chance of finding your way out of the forest.

Some Lenin for today, on the role of socialists in a pre-revolutionary environment. Our role is to support and guide the actions of the masses, the proletariat. Without this, revolutionary situations fizzle out and accomplish nothing, as we have seen with mass protest movements in the past decades.

i hope more people on the left learn their lesson from this. do not trust "ex-military" people. even if they're "anti war", "anti imperialist", or whatever the fuck.
i often see people saying we need ex military, they regret it, etc. Many people are far, FAR too trusting.

Seems like Marx was talking about basically jobless and impoverished young men being recruited to fight against other proletarians. I haven't read the complete chapter or text so there is more context here. But the dynamic does seem to continue to ring true today to some extent.
