this is the paradigm for the verb "to lay" in all of the Middle stages. in the southern languages, the -ċġ- is regularised to -ġ-, while the northern languages turn -ċġ- into -cg-, and then will only (re)palatalise them before front vowels or after e (which is why gēs also becomes ġēs)
