Many, even rurally, are dismayed at the AfD’s advance.

Those I spoke to were prepared to vote tactically - even conservatives are supporting the socialist party of the current state president.

The goal: to build a majority coalition that locks the AfD out of state government - for now. (4/4)

On the verge of victory in three states, the AfD speaks to many affected by real decline. Here in the countryside, there are shop closures, delayed trains and worker shortages - all the party promises to fix. The far-left BWS, also anti-immigration, is profiting from this voter discontent. (3/4)

Of the hundreds of election posters on Thüringen’s streets, it is those from ‘Alternative for Deutschland’ that stand out most.

One reads “Homeland instead of multiculturalism!” Their posters ominously call for “remigration” - the knife attack in Solingen has only fuelled this sentiment. (2/4)
