A 3:30am wakeup call for 4:00am zodiac trip to Salisbury Plain - largest penguin colony on South Georgia. Lots of king & gentoo penguins (moulting), seals + pups, sealions (aggressive). Seas calm but a steady rain. #ShackeltonFootsteps

Good morning from South Georgia Island! Up at 3:30am for 4:00am zodiac to Salisbury Plain, biggest penguin colony on SGI. In Feb this will be too crowded w wildlife to land. Lots of king & gentoo penguins (moulting), seals + pups, sea lions (aggressive). Calm seas but rain. #ShackeltonFootsteps

Biosecurity preparations prior to landing South Georgia Is - one of v few examples of recovering ecosystem - tomorrow. Ship lights dimmed at night to protect birds, rat detection, clothing & equipment cleaned & checked, more disinfecting/cleaning going ashore/returning + avian flu precautions.

As we steam towards South Georgia Island (much more salubrious conditions than Shackleton party) we are busy with lectures, activities, discussion on bird life, clouds, invasive species and Shackelton. Expedition crew built a model of the James Caird to complete the experience. #ShackletonFootsteps

An amazing day: woke to snow covered rocky peaks of South Shetland Islands. First zodiac ride to penguin colonies at Yankee Bay - it's quite a production and Aurora staff do amazing job with encouragement, information, safety, biosecurity. #ShackeltonFootsteps

Crossing Drake's Passage - not too terrible now seas have moderated. We will hit South Shetland Islands early tomorrow. Lots of lectures (birds, glaciers, clouds, photography), safety/ biodiversity protocols. Strict rules due to H5N1 avian flu. All gear checked for fit and biological contamination.
