I am allowed to fail students for AI use, and I do, and I say I will, repeatedly and emphatically. As a result, I wind up having to fail very few students for AI use.
I read the thread and know why they're not failing the students. They gotta let colleges fail the students for the sake of the curriculum and other students
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

And I still think this is another factor why they wanted to "let covid rip" so hard.
A regulated nervous system is a necessity, not a luxury.

Negotiating on a nation to nation basis isn't a woke add-on, it's what prevents blockades and other fires from flaring up all over all at once in a way that is impossible to stop. There is no possible way to ensure the security of everything everywhere. This is a very stupid game to be playing

I think there's a nonzero chance the glimmers of arrogance here blossom into something like the Tyendinaga rail blockade in 2020 except all over. A lot of key logistics lines pass through territory easily accessible to people who could disrupt them. Smirking about zoom calls is a spark to tinder
David Cochrane asks about the fact that it would’ve been impossible for the coastal First Nations to travel from their communities to meet the feds on the timeline the govt offered.

“It’s called Zoom,” Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson responds.

Jesus CHRIST.

I will keep beating this drum, tapping this sign

The only way forward is for us to kill our egos, relearn how to be in community & create from the bottom up community owned… well everything that rewards prosocial relationships and forces everyone to face the consequences of their own actions

the thing about piracy is that if you replace it with "buying secondhand" or "borrowing a friends copy" it cuts through a lot of chaff. you dont see people arguing youre stealing from poor indentured writers when they buy secondhand & you dont see people arguing that borrowing is leftist praxis yfm

Avoid anything from O'Reilly Media from 2024 onwards.

Tim O'Reilly is forcing all of his employees to use Gen AI.

I have books published by them (pre 2024, thank goodness) and an insider view.

If you think it's expensive now, you haven't seen anything yet. Coffee and chocolate are going to become luxury goods as a result of climate change.
Coffee hasn't been this expensive in decades—see how much prices have risen since 1985 in one chart
Grocery-store coffee prices rose 41% in a year, a surge the U.S. hasn’t seen in decades.

Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

rules and incentives are of course a necessary component of getting people to do anything in society, but 1) many of the relevant incentives are themselves informal and 2) the effectiveness of formal rules and incentives depends on part on the informal ones

the fact that dealing with rampant lying and its much worse downstream consequences involves cultivating values rather than just imposing formal frameworks or rules (legal or otherwise) is a tough pill to swallow for some. but it is indeed medicine
Pointing out that something is incorrect definitely isn't sufficient - the *culture* of "it is bad to make incorrect statements, good to promptly and clearly retract and apologize for them, and disqualifying to keep making them deliberately" is the framework needed for fact-checking to plug into.

Like spoiled brats never told no, finally told no, the ruling class faced consequences for the first time and they havnt stopped throwing violent temper tantrums since - literally and figuratively removing their masks revealing miserable black holes masquerading as humans
Virtually our entire leadership caste across multiple segments of society simultaneously tore their masks off to reveal black holes where humans should be. It's quite something!

The "Larry Summers complained to Jeffrey Epstein that MeToo went too far" and "Olivia Nuzzi committed crimes on behalf of the fascist she masturbated with while reporting on him" are the same story: American elites have no ideology other than "I should be untouchable." Society is run by empty husks

The root of every problem we face is that some people believe they are entitled to never face the consequences of their actions because they’ve never been held accountable from a lifetime papering over consequences

While at the same time forcing others to shoulder the burden of every consequence

Capitalism is a system that destroys prosocial relationships replacing them with cruel transactions they call markets then rewarding cruel people with the power to never face the consequences of their cruelty while forcing prosocial people to shoulder the burden of everyone’s consequences
I wrote about a novel approach to tackling misinformation currently being discussed in Wales--and which some say Canada should try, too. What if we made a rule so politicians couldn't lie? www.thestar.com/politics/fed...
Is it time to make it illegal for politicians to lie to us?
That’s the question currently on the table in Wales, which has just released a draft of the “globally pioneering” sanctions for politicians.

Lots of people sharing this clip because it's funny and cathartic but I also genuinely believe it's important.

We have to win the narrative battle between "I live in a corrupt society and that's just how it is" and "I live in a corrupt society and we are going to defeat and humiliate these ghouls."
Good morning to Brazilian reporter Manuela Borges, who’s been waiting eleven years for this petty moment. ❤️ 🇧🇷

This is a big signal that Nvidia's cash flow is becoming a tangible problem.

Remember when Elon Musk stopped paying Google Cloud bills so he could keep the electricity on at Twitter?

Cutting non-critical expenses when cash gets tight, even if it makes operations harder, is the Death Spiral.
