Deuce (PS1) (2000, Unreleased)

Our hero, Deuce! He's an anthropomorphic card, a two of hearts to be more precise, hence the name. He's a lowly soldier with a 2D flat heart of gold on a quest to save the kingdom and the Royal Flush from the clutches of the evil Jack of Spades! Deuce's wearing an iron helm with a nose guard on his floaty head, looking very cheerful and cheeky despite his circumstances. He's standing in front of a giant castle gate with two other card soldiers holding the gate. A cozy looking medieval village settled atop a cliffside with a bridge or two with lit torches to illuminate the pitch-black night. Though to be fair the complete absence of any sky or stars might be due to the unfinished nature of the game. Still, it looks really nice so it would be a shame not to showcase all this lovely art. Deuce swinging his sword at a woolly fuzzy (or possibly made of stone, it's hard to tell) bipedal creature, sticking that blade right in the middle of its forehead though it looks mostly unperturbed and just angry. Deuce standing in a large castle hall lit by an intense green lighting, looking at a wall with a sort of a pinecone shaped door (or a buttplug, take your pick).

Die Hard Trilogy (PS1) (1996)

(whoops somehow uploaded very low res screenshots, let's try that again)
John McClane standing in an office hallway with a ho ho ho big machinegun opposite half a dozen dudes in blue jackets and green World War II helmets (?) guarding a guy in a pink shirt and a cool soul patch with massive red letters above his head spelling out the word BOSS. It's important to note that all the characters in this game are kinda 2D but made out of separate paper doll cutouts for each of the body parts, like head, torso, upper and lower arm etc. which creates this really wonky look to them but also opens up the game to have a lot of characters on screen. The other good part is that the faces of the enemies are just photos of the devs themselves making funny faces and looking all silly which is always a plus. Stand-ins for Bruce Willis and Samuel Leroy Jackson running towards a taxi standing in the middle of a park road, looking very disjointed in their paper doll look while the smallest blue helicopter is hovering right above their heads. It's kind of a cool wide lens shot with a nice glimpse of the park's treeline and cute pixel buildings in the distance under the most SEGA-ass blue sky you ever did experience. John doing John things, just strolling through an airport shooting at terrorists and making a mess of things. This game is technically kind of pretty impressive because there are three games in one, the framerates are pretty smooth and in the Die Hard 2 rail shooting part you can pretty much shoot anything on screen and it will react or be destroyed in some way, from the wall facades and ceilings to large and small objects, it's all very destructible and creates a great feel you don't see often. This makes it even more impressive when you realize this was made by a so called B team of Probe Software who were tasked in making this game in a very short time period while Team A was making Alien Trilogy (another very cool game). Check out one of the artists' Youtube channel, Dennis Gustafsson, that only has the 7 part playlist of a private in-house recording of the development of Die Hard Trilogy, it's a wonderful look at 90s game development and a bunch of enthusiastic folks working on games. https://www.youtube.com/@dennis9ustafsson/videos Also I just noticed while writing this that the face of the bad guy in this screenshot is the same person from the first screenshot with the boss character. A cool green wireframe look of Nakatomi Plaza shown after every level of the Die Hard 1 portion of the game, with a white outline showing the next floor you're about to arrive at.

Excalibur 2555 A.D. (PS1) (1997)

We see our hero Beth, looking a bit confused as she's just been transported through time inside some kind of cave or mine by none other than Merlin the wizard, to stop the evil soldiers of the future from stealing the famed sword Excalibur. She's sporting a blonde hair tied in a low bun, a red shirt with a bit of cleavage showing because it was the style at Arthurian times, wearing no pants and also weilding the largest, thickest sword you've ever seen. It's like Guts' Dragon Slayer sword but if it was only a third as long. It's not about the length, it's how you use it! A look at the same scene but from the original European version of the game (the rest of the screenshots are from the US version because I didn't even know there were any differences at the time of taking the other screenshots). In this original version, Beth has brown hair, looks a little bit angrier, her shirt is green and most importantly wears brown pants and knee high socks, all very Robin Hood like. So the US version had to be sexied-up because that was the only thing wrong with this game and it would surely boost sales. 👀 An injured soldier of the future with a very futuristic orange shirt and a Tiffany Blue vest, fingerless gloves (not because it's cool but because he don't have no fingers, he's too low poly for that), holding a gun and wearing a bandage on his head that's positioned a bit too high and then they just added more hair above it so his head is very elongated and his face very smushed. Hey, maybe that's a side effect of future people living in these mines so gravity has pulled their faces down more. I have to mention that all of the textures in this game look like they've been drawn in paint, and though there's nothing wrong with that, it does give off a more amateurish look, especially to the character faces, creating a unique art style that only Ringo Starr could love. Beth encountering a giant red scorpion (no not a RAD scorpion, though it's as big as one) and proceeding to slice and dice it with her chub sword. It's one of the many, many giant scorpions and spiders you fight in this game.

C.O.P. The Recruit (NDS) (2009)

Our hero, Sam Miles, looking like a Hunger Games era Sam Claflin with short shaggy blonde hair, pink t-shirt and a denim jacket looking all cool and whatever with the city of New York behind him (well, actually it's a very bleak looking parking lot). The cloudy blue skies have a very pixely dithered pattern on them, giving off an early internet gif quality to it. The offices of the Criminal Overturn Program (C.O.P.), a huge room full of desks and monitors, looking more well equipped than a NASA control center. Dan driving a dingy pink car through a very long two-way tunnel with nice warm lighting and large commercial billboards for a financial services company called TekalTrust (I don't know why that would be relevant in any way but I thought I'd nevertheless include it in the description just to fill in space). Dan walking the streets with his service weapon out like a crazy person, the towering skyscrapers looking pristine in their glass facades. To keep the performance to a manageable level, the devs have really lowered the details on the big buildings to essentially just have a flat reflexive surface with no window lines and other details, so a good majority of the city looks like a futuristic glass maze. A couple of people are just walking pass Dan not even noticing his gun out, coz' this is NYC baby and it's all normal.

R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 (PS1) (1998)

A red Assoluto Rondine (they're all fictitious cars inspired by real life models afaik) driving through a night tunnel at a Dutch angle. It's got a bit of an odd design with the entire upper front part of the car being sliced at an angle into its own separate part but it's not easily visible from this angle. Weird cars are neat! A line of cars vying for supremacy, driving through a wide cobblestone road at night, with a silver Lizard Comrade leading the race. The car has a couple of blue stripes going through the middle and the words "RT SOLVALOU" on the hood, a reference to the starship from the Xevious series. A yellow and red Terrazi Ambitious adorned with the decals of the Pac Racing Club (PRC) inspired by Pac-Man with a big number 76 on the doors and the Pac-Man himself! A distant wide shot of a white Âge Solo Prophetie driving through a curvy winding cliffside road. R4 is a beautiful game but shots like these can really make it shine!

Crash Bandicoot (PS1) (1998)

Two middle-aged men (one of them with a giant N on his forehead that stands for "nerd") with too much time on their hands build a machine to torture animals with electroshocks, but tampering with nature is never a good idea so I'm sure they'll get what they deserve by the end of the this game... and the next 20 sequels. I'm of course talking about Dr. Neo Cortex and his high school buddy and assistant Dr. Nitrus Brio, depicted here as they're putting Crash Bandicoot through their mutation and brainwashing machine which fails horribly and gives enough time for Crash to escape! Crash being adorned by the mask of the witch doctor spirit Aku Aku, a flat piece of wood with misaligned eyes, a beautiful mouth with big sensual lips and a few feathers on top. Oodabaga! Pinstripe Potoroo, a slick, well dressed anthropomorphic marsupial mafioso (what a mouthful!) doing his best Scarface impression while shooting his Tommy gun at you. His office is pretty fancy with a fancy rug and a fancy mahogany table (now flipped and used as cover) with a giant portrait of Dr. Neo Cortex adorning the wall on the right. Behind Pinstripe Potoroo is a big cylindrical room with a vat of green goo and a central spherical doodad with lots of pipes connected to it, looking very ominous. I bet they're brewing some mean spirits in that distillery. A shoulder cam following Crash right into Dr. Nitrus Brio's lair. A short but elongated man with an even more elongated head (he's full of contradictions, both physically and emotionally), holding a couple of beakers of pink and green fluids, surrounded by all sorts of chemical equipment. You can tell he's ready to party. His laboratory is pretty cozy with ominous stone walls and a spiky iron fence guarding a big castle window and letting the moonlight in.

Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth (N64) (1998)

The F98 Soldier Blade fighter ship being deployed by a large yellow dropship in deep space. The dropship design in particular is pretty cool and striking, with many engine exhausts adorning the yellow mama-bird ship, opening the back hangar to reveal our hero's ship. It all looks very calm in the vast darkness of space, though that calm will be immediately broken by the alien invasion of the sentient machine Zeograd forces! The F98 Soldier Blade flying toward the camera with a distant red moon seen in the upper right corner of the screen. The fighter ship has a fancy arrowhead design with silver and red segments and a few green details on the top mounted guns and the cockpit glass. We can see the engine going full blast by the spherical exhaust blasting from the back of the ship. Boy he sure is in a hurry! Flying through a cyberspace-like environment with two big purple octagonal shapes sticking out of the dark blue sea of information. The enemy forces are rushing in but the Soldier Blade is making mince meat of them. This must be what it looks like in the TRON world when an online argument is underway. Zipping low over a beautiful blue ocean while a giant black boss ship is spewing an absolute torrent of a giant purple laser, narrowly dodged by the Soldier Blade. It must've been chargin' it for a while there. Two hexagonal drone things are sending beams of purple electricity (the worst kind) to the enemy ship to power it up.

Centipede (PS1) (1999)

The eponymous centipede, this time sporting a trippy blue and orange look, rather sharp teeth and threatening snake eyes, wiggling around with its little leggies. The terrain is rocky with some grass (the green parts of the textures, ok?) and very spiky parts of the ground sticking out and there's some orange mushrooms scattered about. I wonder if they're edible? Our hero, Wally Gudmunzsun (incredible name) piloting his signature hovercraft, The Shooter, driving it carelessly around what appears to be a village with some nice medieval houses. Is this the first GTA before GTA? I think so. (not it's not) This game has a story campaign where Wally is supposed to defend the collective of villages called the Weedom (420 blaze it) from the insect invaders led by the Queen Pede. Come to think of it, tying Centipede to some kind of weed-related setting makes sense. The colorful trippy visuals certainly help. A winter wonderland with wonderful bisexual lighting, spiky cliffs with light blue towers scattered around them, looks real nice! The centerpiece of this screenshot is a beautiful golden spire with a golden disc aligned horizontally near the top, surrounded by floating crystals and what look like frozen mushrooms scattered on the purple-blue ground. The spire-shaped structure has a bit of that Starcraft Protoss structure style. I wouldn't mind them constructing additional pylons of this sort. A closer look at our hero Wally with his short spiky anime hair, huge spectacles and a bewildering look while wearing a radioactive-green shirt, strapped onto the seat of his hovercraft with purple-orange straps. He looks like he doesn't have a clue about what's going on. It's the benefit and the curse of being the protector of the Weedom.

Lattice 200EC7 (PS1) (2000)

Lattice 200EC7 is a very abstract and unique on-rails shooter where the player rides and rotates around these metallic rails while trying to shoot and destroy 3 colored key capsules and open their corresponding gates and finish the level, all the while listening to groovy electronic tracks by Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra fame. This is the level select screen showing a purple-ish cyberspace void with different nodes and connections between them serving as the level select screen. Since this is a totally weird and abstract game, I'm just gonna give my own interpretation of the art that is in front of me. In the void of space there's these two yellowish light spheres (representing the dreamer's physical need to pee) hovering around a complex megastructure of cyber-steel and three colorful cyber-runes (I think it's just showing you the layout of the level, as if that's gonna help you in this extremely disorienting game) representing the structure of neurons firing, shaping the dream where you're endlessly searching for a toilet but can't find one. There's also these giant gray shapes in the distance, almost like asteroids or moons but more organic, signifying that there might also be kidney stones in that pee. You can tell I'm in a weird mood today. Starting the level with a gray metallic road you have to ride on, with the gray meteoric shapes scattered in the far distance, breaking the cold darkness of cyberspace. There's a spiral, almost spine-like shape twisting around you and the road, enveloping you, with colorful shapes and cyber-runes glowing in the distance. This represents the feeling of your life spiraling out of control when you realize you've peed your pants. As we go through the spiraling road of pant-wetting, we arrive at a green cube enveloping the road, serving as an obstacle, or perhaps an opportunity? Four red triangles cover the edges of the screen, pointing at an explosion at the end of the road. This is your brain reminding you that the green pee you've been having for the past couple of days might be a sign of a UTI.

S.C.A.R.S. (PS1) (1998)

In the year 3000, supercomputers battle each other in racing simulations where each of their representative vehicle is inspired by a real life animal. Honestly, it does kinda sound like something AI might come up with these days... Here we see the "Lion" car doing a cool drift through a rocky road, surrounded by a lush jungle and approaching a tunnel with a stained glass ceiling. A rocky desert track with fiery red sunset skies with an awesome low poly bald eagle soaring through said skies. The symbol of the US of A has never looked so chunky. The "Rhino" car doing a drift through a lovely snowy road baskin in the purple light of the frozen sunset skies. The reflection map on the chrome car and the high detailed sprites for the wheels make this scene pretty good looking and kinda advanced even though some of it is trickery. The wheels are pretty impressive because they're just 2D sprites but have a very high number of frames depending on the view angle so they look very smooth! The "Cheetah" vehicle (it looks NOTHING like a cheetah btw) driving through some trench-like roads with high walls with a couple of tall city buildings and spotlights covering the right side of the night sky. It's a pretty cozy looking night city and the textures and colorful vertex lighting makes it looks very nice!

Body Harvest (N64) (1998)

A look at a space station orbiting Earth, Station Omega, the last refuge of the human race from the alien invaders that have conquered our planet and are harvesting bodies as per the title. It's a three-pronged station with a satellite dish looking thing in the middle. The station is being attacked by the alien invaders with their red, claw-shaped fighter ships. Our hero, Adam Drake, wearing an orange-and-blue armor and helmet, with bare arms showing his muscles (and a bit of blood for a wound), looking all Captain Power like. He's looking over his shoulder for the pursuing insectoid aliens that are boarding the station. Behind him is a monitor with his colleague, Daisy Hernandez, pink hair and black headband, the portrait almost looks like a female Gambit from the X-Men. She advises him to hurry to the time traveling chamber and jump through time to stop the invasion from ever happening. Adam arrives in 1916 Greece, already infested with the bug-like invaders. One of the larger six-legged bugs is standing on the road on the left while our hero is trying to aim at it and failing miserably. Whomever was playing while this screenshot was being taken ain't very good at video games. 👀 Adam standing on a mustardy field (perhaps it's autumn I dunno) next to an early 20th century jalopy, looking very much like a 1916 Ford Model T (I googled it). The magical thing about this game is that it was developed by DMA Design who would eventually rebrand as Rockstar Games and the game feels like a proto-GTA with its open world design, a wide array of drivable vehicles and missions to do.

Blasto (PS1) (1998)

The game opens with a large sign saying "Welcome to Uranus" floating in space near a brownish celestial sphere shrouded in darkness (I bet it's Uranus *ba dum tss*) above some flat platforms and a stylish glass dome, all looking very very Looney Tunes like, specifically the spacey cartoons with Marvin the Martian. A bodacious red-haired babe smilingly waits to be rescued by our hero. Like everything else, her outfit is very 50s retro-futurism coded. A Pikmin-looking green alien with a dangling antenna with a red bulb on top is shooting at you with his fancy laser gun, looking very stylish in his pink astrosuit. He's standing in front of what looks like a glass wall next to a street light. Very noir and abstract at the same time, this street in deep space, going nowhere. Our hero, Blasto (voiced by Phil Hartman no less) in an intense encounter with an alien, set on a lava covered planet with floating pieces of land scattered here and there and a tree that's somehow survived in this hellscape. Good work, tree! The clear night sky is visible on the horizon with a large planet with a ring orbiting in the distance. How anybody is able to breathe in these environments is anybody's guess.

Fighting Force (PS1) (1999)

A gosh darn mercenary, hero and Leon Kennedy lookalike Hawk Manson doing the highest of high kicks while wearing tactical gear almost worthy of a young Big Boss. His astronomically high kick is currently making contact with the head of one of the clone army thugs (led by The Knackmiche Corporation, try googling it, you'll only get Fighting Force 2 results, now THAT'S some good SEO) who are wearing blue ninja uniforms and girthy metallic codpieces. This particular blue ninja that's currently being kicked in the noggin has a bright flash over his head, as if to signify that maybe instead of good crotch armor, they should've invested more in getting a helmet or something. An octagonal hallway with a large bulk head at the end with very warm golden yellow/orange lighting, seen from the first person. Hawk is extending his arm and doing the gangsta sideways gun thing, aiming it at a poor scared enemy that's literally holding his gun in over his face in fear, pooping his pants. The words KEEP - CLEAR are display on both side walls of the hallway. The thug obviously didn't follow that advice. A closeup of our hero wearing a jungle camo version of his tactical gear (he changes outfits a few times during the game, pretty neat!) with a jungle, some ruins and a sandy beach behind him, with pale blue skies and the sun shining brithly above. Hawk has come to Ibiza. It's time to party. Another first person, side gun look, this time at a sexy female ninja assassin, with short blue hair, bare arms and showing a bit of cleavage (as was the male-gaze-oriented-female-character-game-design fashion of the time) and wielding a pretty sharp looking katana. She's just casually standing there under a large doorway, stepping out of the darkness, hand on hip, looking all like "what's this guy gonna do, shoot me?" That's exactly what Hawk did.

Legend (PS1) (1998)

One of our heroes, Axel, looking like a young Ray Wise with a narrow backwards-spiky black hair, sporting a nice armor that properly shows his bare shoulder, the other one covered hefty pauldron. He's carrying a pretty hefty axe but the blade is so thick and kinda chunky/bloaty that it looks more like an inflatable toy axe. Just a very naked pig man doing pig man things. He does have nice diapers with a huuuge belt holding them up (thank god). Mr. pig man is standing on some kind of wooden bridge in front of a castle and he's looking kinda drowsy with his eyes closed and his head turned in deep sleep or disgust, not sure. Another thug, this time a spitting image of one Arnold Schwarzenegger with a warrior helmet, some nice purple pants and brown boots. He's very awkwardly holding a poleaxe almost as if he's holding a broom, trying to shoo off a seagull or something. Another one of our heroes, the warrior Tara. She's got long-ish blonde hair tied in a ponytail, wearing some kind of a warrior dress, almost like a Chinese qipao dress (similar to Chun-Li's for example) with short sleeves, fully black with bright red rims. She's also wearing thigh-high white leggings for that extra 90s female character design. She's in a very battle-ready stance, about to gut the first thug with her very wide and flat sword. However the most striking feature is her face that looks like a flat surface stuck with a photo of a woman's face that was then painted over in Microsoft Paint for some extra eeriness.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (N64) (1997)

The titular Turok, trying to target the top of your temple. It's a scene from the intro where Turok, with his shirtless bod and impeccable aim (even in thick fog) is drawing an arrow with his trusty bow, aimed right above the camera. One of the enemies in the first level, a jolly looking fellow, showing off his pecks being all shirtless with arm pads and brown poppy pants and aiming at you with a machinegun. His face is clearly a photo of one of the developers, tacked on a few polygons and kinda squished a little bit with some red paint on his forhead and sporting a dumb smile with a few missing teeth. It's probably one of my favorite enemies in the game. Turok looks upwards to the sky as a tall tall tree fades behind the clouds. A few vines hang scattered around and a neat looking palm tree, and of course the thick blue-gray fog that permeates the entire game. A dark rocky scene with a lava pool covering the entire floor and a few purple triangle pickups are floating above, adding even more to the surrealistic look of the game. Turok is holding some big ass high-tech gun, and nobody to shoot it at. Aww :(.

Gekido: Urban Fighters (PS1) (2000)

Travis, a private detective hired to find a kidnapped girl is roaming the streets at night with his red hair, white shirt and jeans and shoulder gun holster, doing a squat and charging up his electric powers to land a devastating blow to crime. One of the bosses in this decrepit neighborhood is Generale, a buff dude with a blue beret, eyepatch and moustache, small black shirt and red pants. I had to zoom in a bit even though the gun in his hand is huge, it just looks like a gray cylinder so I don't know if it's a pipe, a cigar or a gun (it's a gun). Another boss, Kobuchi, a muscley weirdo with a receding hairline, a devilish grin and a face texture that's a bit too stretched wide so it makes him look like a humanoid monster with a mask with a man's face printed on it. He wields Wolverine-like claw blades on his right arm that also extends pretty far to deal a little bit of tickle damage. A closer back shot of Travis on a more Japanese looking street with a few thugs running at him. By the way, none of these screenshots of this game show the actual camera perspective which is a more classic sidescrolling brawler, so it's kinda nice seeing this game with it's sometimes impressive graphics being seen from a different perspective, almost like a more modern third person shooter.

Jet Moto (PS1) (1996)

A wide four-lane race track littered with over a dozen hovercraft bikes set on a wonderful tropical resort with some cliffs and a large hotel building in the distance. Smack in the middle is the starting line with a huge ad for Mountain Dew which also sponsors the racers so a bunch of them area wearing the green red and white suits and decals on their hovercraft. Kind of a funny thing how the LOD (level of detail) works in this game, since there's a large number of racers on screen, the LOD is very aggressive and pops in very close to the player so at least half of the racers are in lower detail but they're made of just a couple of flat planes and textures so it's very jarring. A racer zooming off a ramp and flying through the air over a sandy beach with palm trees and red buoys designating the edge of the track. The ocean stretches into infinity and you can see a few fluffy white clouds scattered around the clear blue skies. Man I need a vacation. A closer chase cam behind a racer in a stripy yellow and black outfit, very bee-like, zooming over a swamp with the water splashing under it (the splash textures are pretty effective especially for the PS1 era) with a few broken and rotted trees scattered about and it's all nicely reflected onto the surprisingly clear (though black) water of the swamp. A towering ad for Pepsi World just over the next racing gate. A racer rushing through a curvy oval tunnel lit with yellow night lights, looking very nice and moody and in stark contrast at the end of the tunnel is a glimpse of the snowy mountain range the race is set on.

Apocalypse (PS1) (1998)

Our hero, Trey Kincaid, voiced by none other than Bruce Willis (who provided his likeness for the character as well, here on full display in all his action hero glory. Kincaid is standing in a narrow hallway in his short sleeve brown shirt and green pants with a grenade belt around his thighs and a sort of metal exoskeleton/boots around his lower legs. He's weilding some kind of futuristic machinegun. Kincaid aiming at the crotch of a hulking robot guardian with a sort-of a Transformer kind of face, a large yellow pauldron over its right hand which is just a slab of incoming pain, and a large yellow star on his chest. Is he the sheriff of this town? Probably, with a tin star the size of his head. A look at a city street completely split open with a river of lava underneath it, like the city of Venice but IN HELL! Kincaid is standing on the roof of a taxi hovercar with a few other taxis flying in front. The design and idea is very obviously inspired by The Fifth Element, another Willis joint. One of the four horsemen of the titular apocalypse, Death, seen from a very low step-on-me angle. Death looks very ethereal, basically a glowing skeleton with a ghostly cloak, giving off a genuine Scare Glow vibe to him and his right arm turns into a scythe at the end. He is voiced by Joe Frank, the voice of the computer in Galaxy Quest.

Ape Escape (PS1) (1999)

A science facility overrun with apes... who've escaped! They're very silly and have bulging googly eyes and metal helmets with red alarm lights on them. They're confused, chaotic and ready to cause mayhem! The Professor (that's his name, just like The Doctor) and his granddaughter Natalie aka Katie aka Natsumi depending on where you live, tied up to the wall, looking shocked while witnessing the inhuman atrocities the apes are committing off-screen (I'm guessing they're just flinging poop at each other). Our hero Spike aka Kakeru, with his spiky hair, red and white shirt and blue shorts showing off by doing a one arm handstand. The scene is set on a grassy meadow with some rocks and cliffs in the distance with a big rocket with Specter's face decal on its side (the main apetagonist) lodged in it. A single cheeky monkey is standing on a rock, looking all dandy. A closeup of a Zooka, an ungodly monstrosity out of time and space. It's basically a googly-eyed green thing with puffy pink cheeks and a sexy, sensual puckered mouth. We only really see its head as it pops out of the ground to shoot rocks out of its sexy, hot mouth.

AD&D: Iron & Blood: Warriors of Ravenloft (PS1) (1996)

Luthor the Paladin looking like he's got lines of coke sprinkled on his eyebrows and nose (it's just pure white pixels) and weird enlarged pupils like a YouTube thumbnail from a few years ago. He's sporting a white and blue armor with golden crosses (well they're really plus signs, he's really into math) and wielding a huge zweihänder. This game has a very peculiar, early PS1 western dev style where the characters have unusually high polygon detail on unnecessary things like the pieces of the sword handle or even Luthor's hair, where the artists were probably used to different high-poly techniques and not taking advantage of the texture work to carry some of the detail. Because the textures also look extremely plain and amateurish compared to other PS1 games of 1996. Growing pains and learning how to make the most of the hardware has certainly contributed to this game having pretty gnarly art direction. Balok the Black Knight vs Togo the Dwarf set upon a platform of concrete and and red runes on its sides with meadows, mountains and a huge castle looming in the distance. Balok is an evil dude with spiky dark armor and a helmet with two front protruding horns, very much like the classic Marvel Loki design. He's wearing a shield and a vampiric blade that controls him. Togo is your classic dwarven warrior with red hair and beard and a massive hammer and a curious helmet with one big horn protruding from the front, almost like a Rhino. Just two horny guys looking deeply into each other's eyes. Sasha the Werewolf, doing a scary squatting "I'm gonna get ya" stance with her claws under the pale moonlight. First of all, I love the little twist of having the werewolf character be a lady for once. Second of all, she's got like a stripy brown shirt showing her cleavage and best of all, she kinda looks like she's wearing lipstick in this shot (although that might be dude to some polygons overlapping and being more visible due to the high resolution. Shinesta the Elven Princess. I think this is her alt color with brown hair and green outfit (she's blonde with a purple colored shirt and pants). She's an elf lady sporting a quarterstaff and has a thirst for knowledge of the arcane and magical. Also apparently she's not an actual princess and "the title refers to her stubborn and haughty personality". Well excuuuuuse me, princess!

Shadowgate 64 (N64) (1999)

This game is dark and murky with subdued colors, caves, dungeons, and castle hallways so it's got a certain vibe and look throughout all of the screenshots here. Though this one has a bit of color as well, we see an antechamber of a castle (probably?) with red and blue tapestries, a chandelier and a central hallway leading deeper into the castle a a door on the left (there's one on the right as well, off screen). An ancient crypt with ornate walls with a big stone plaque with some blurry symbols or runes on it. There's a passage with some stairs behind the plaque and a big shield crest above showing two intertwined dragons. A hulking brute carrying the hero's unconscious body on his shoulder, walking through a dungeon hallway lit by lanterns on the ceiling and just about to through your sorry ass into the brig. A dungeon sewer with some broken and bent metal grating on the ceiling. I could've said this is like an underground river or something but that ain't water and it ain't fresh.

Einhänder (PS1) (1998)

The Einhänder, a spacecraft vaguely resembling a bird shape with two huge thrusters on the top and grabby grab legs, in this case carrying a large cannon. The ship is flying through an urban nighttime cyberpunk backdrop with tall skyscrapers and lit windows, with a large banner on the side of one building that says "Legend of ⭐ Super Powers". Not sure if the star goes after "of" or "powers", but there's a star in the corner. Maybe just to add to the coolness of the PowerPoint presentation style of the banner. A couple of yellow and green hovercraft with their emergency lights on, possibly cops, flying over a highway at night with the dim red lights of the city in the background sparkling under a cloudy night sky. The Einhänder rushing head on into a bipedal tank boss with a green and brown military camo paint and the number 09 on its side. Could this be... Metal Gear? Another boss fight inside what looks like a high-tech industrial tunnel with a giant spider bot clinging on the side walls with its spidey legs. It's got that yellow and black stripes construction site paintjob, armed with cannons and missile launchers and green neon V-shaped lights on its legs. The neon lighting suggests this might be a gamer spider-bot.

Akuji the Heartless (PS1) (1999)

A closeup of the titular character Akuji, a voodoo priest and warrior, having his heart ripped out (on his wedding day!) and cursed to wander the underworld, which is made of old ruins with blue and green lighting (very moody). Akuji wears a peculiar spiky bone mask and is voiced by Richard Roundtree aka Shaft. A closeup of Kesho, Akuji's bride to be, looking as blue as a daba dee daba die (she's spiritually projecting to the underworld to warn Akuji). She's basically just wearing a bikini with some arm and leg wrappings and a loincloth with three little skulls on it. Peak 90s female character design. A dungeon hall with large paintings of creepy skeleton things. Rocky cliffs surrounded by a dark green mist and a a massive ornate blue and silver portal structure with a statue of one of those aforementioned creepy skeleton things standing there with open arms.
