The rules of thumb are in the rule books.
In the context of the time, DMs were expected to do *all* of the work so this is already giving a new DM rails to use. It was a while before there were even published modules for the game because they thought no one would want prewritten adventures.

Awesome! I ran a campaign in a Thundarr-with-the-serial-numbers-filed-off setting using DCC. All character options were on the table - 1st party, 3rd party, fan made, fantasy, scifi, post-apoc, horror. It was a blast!

I like the idea of the pre-game as described here in the PHB but like you said - it sounds tedious for more than one player.

I've been thinking of writing a review of another one of his adventures - it would be my first. It will be based on use at the table and it won't be gushing praise. Very apprehensive about doing so!
