Stede has this whole unfinished journey where he kills his softness because he thinks that's what he has to do and because that's what everyone has told him to do his whole life, and the point is that he's NOT supposed to do that and that he's suppressing a lot of himself by doing that.

Like the Ed in Stede's head notices the beard and asks about the beard and Stede is clearly insecure about the beard, but he thinks Ed wants him more masculine when Ed (allegedly) just wants him as he comes. I can respect an argument about the steard representing growth but I just disagree lol

A more obvious manifestation of this is Izzy's presence and him telling Stede that he didn't make Stede leave Ed. Like I don't think Stede is fantasizing about growing a beard and killing Izzy because those are his deepest desires. I think that's a very surface-level read. We can do better than that

I don't even know how to put it into words, but basically 2.01's opening sequence is Stede's self-hatred manifesting in various ways. He's more masculine because he thinks he has to be more masculine, especially to please Ed (which Ed at times encourages and other times discourages, quite unhelpful)
