Tonight’s #UrbanismBookClub book tackles better city-making from the communications, branding, & public relations spheres. “Dark PR: How Corporate Disinformation Undermines Our Health & Environment” by my friend @grantennis.bsky.social is a HUGELY important book today. Every urbanist should read it.

Effective Altruism inevitably operates as a kind of fascist cult: it is a mode of thinking that liberates its followers from any direct moral responsibility for their actions.

In 1945, the US Army put out a training manual designed to equip rank and file soldiers with the tools to spot and combat incipient fascism were it to emerge in post-war America. Those lessons are just as American as Miller's illiberal bigotry, and worth remembering today. bsky.app/profile/seth...
The first fascistic tactic to look out for is a hate campaign against a particular religious, racial, or ethnic group. Like, for example, let's say a candidate emerges who calls all people of one nationality "rapists" and "criminals," while promising to ban immigrants from only one religious group.

Since there’s no Alt for the DoE I’ll share this info as someone with multiple higher degrees I wouldn’t be able to afford with these changes in place
Again, there is no plan for running our universities without federal funding, or foreign students, at scale. But the public has no idea about this because no. one. is. telling. them. this. They expect their kids are still going to be able to do all the things at college in the next 4 years, & well:
The entire business model of R1 public universities rests on 4 revenue sources:

1. Federal grants
2. Private gifts/endowments
3. Tuition (esp. from foreign students)
4. State $

For decades, 📈 in 1-3 offset a secular 📉 in 4. Now, 1 & 3 are being decimated & 4 ain't coming back. The math is clear.

It’s time! Blackout Friday!

Please join unions 💪 & organizers 🤝 worldwide and BUY NOTHING 💸🙅from big chains this weekend! Instead support small & local businesses 💵 🙌 while sending the message:

the People Will Not Tolerate Corporate Complicity With Authoritarianism & Worker Oppression!
Black Friday sales are tempting, but remember unions are calling for a mass shopping strike for national chains, esp. Amazon, Whole Foods, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Starbucks, & Apple. If you shop between now & Dec 2, please support small & local businesses & avoid crossing the picket line 💪

As I always do with boycotts, I urge: be tough with corporations, gentle with individual buyers. For some people, Black Friday sales are the way they get their kids jackets that fit, shoes that hold up to the weather. Yelling at them doesn’t help the cause.

I wrote about Oura's security and privacy practices earlier this year for this.weekinsecurity.com, and found:

• Oura rings *don't* end-to-end encrypt users' health data;
• Oura *can* access its users' data;
• Oura told me that the company *has* received U.S. government demands for users' data.
