I watch too much stuff and proceed to reference that stuff too much.

DNI: Bad Opinions
I just wish we got some more new restorations. Between Tex Avery, Looney Tunes and even the few T&Js here, WAC have been pumping out some of the best animated restorations I've ever seen. Asking them to do all 114 is a complete pipe dream but I would've loved a little more than what we got.

It all depends what you think of WB's usual restorations, I suppose. I'm pretty sure 95% of what's here are the same versions they've used for previous Blu-ray sets and on HBO Max (albeit, some with less grain).
So it will look expectedly clean and vibrant but it's all up to personal preference.

I probably won't sell my Golden Collection but owning the next 77 shorts in a far better non-TV quality, without the PAL speed-up of the DVDs, is all I've wanted for years to begin with.
Those Metrocolors were just an added bonus, really. If they didn't hype it up, we wouldn't be as disappointed.

The Metrocolors and DVNR are disappointing but it's still all 114 shorts together for the first time, uncut and restored in HD, with special features. All for a good value.
107 shorts still look better than previous releases, including those incredible new restorations (just wish there were more.)

There was the odd segment I thought the reboot did better (the Ten and Sakura episode, for instance) but I did prefer the slower pacing and crueller humour of the original. The reboot was good but it lost that unpolished/exaggerated charm and brutal slapstick from the original.

That was my main gripe with the UY reboot.
I would've preferred if it stuck to doing new chapters or ones that were heavily altered fro the original show, rather than just adapting shorter versions that the original did perfectly fine.

The whole show does a good job at making everything feel connected.
I enjoy the OG Ranma a ton (especially the art) but, honestly, the reboot improves on it in so many ways. Let's hope it goes on long enough to start adapting new stuff.

Like, even with S2 being more episodic than the first (where basically every episode led into the next), it feels really organised.
We can get multiple Ukyo episodes in a row, the same way we can get a chunk of story-driven episodes and it feels equally as important, instead of just jumping around.

This bit had me pissing myself. The animation and voicework is so naturally funny.
UY's reboot doing "essentials" meant you mostly got the important/character-driven stories, with few of the simply fun one-offs.
Ranma feels better paced, giving its characters equal focus through blocks of episodes.

Assuming it's good, I'm definitely gonna be one of those posts but, as mine isn't supposed to be arriving until the 9th, no chance you'll be spoiled by it.
Right now, I'm just waiting for the reviews. Usually you get one a week or two early but this set's been radio silent.

Actual Saints Row 4 cutscene.

'The Yankee Doodle Mouse' looks pretty good on the Golden Collection but, in comparison to the Anthology, it's night and day. Just look at how much clearer the "Tobacco" lettering is.
I'm interested in how they've improved 'The Midnight Snack', as that's easily one of, if not THE best on the GC.

Honestly, I've used it a ton and it ain't bad. Despite compression and the infamous Metrocolors, they all look very clean and sharp enough. There are far worse ways to watch these.
It's just that the upcoming set is such an improvement that it blows this old one out of the water.
November 29, 2025 at 9:51 PM
Update, these do use better sources than the ones for the Golden Collection. Though, it's still most likely the Archive's control that's led to the quality being as good as they are.
After all, their new restorations for the Collector's Choice/Vault may be the best Looney Tunes have ever recieved.
November 26, 2025 at 9:12 PM
It's bizarre to think just how long it's taken to do a complete release, especially when you consider how it's only 114 shorts and all but two have already been restored.
Even WHV putting the Golden Collection on smaller discs, so the quality is all compressed, is one of many questionable decisions.
November 26, 2025 at 9:08 PM
Regardless, the extent is HAS been improved is still shocking. I was expecting brighter greys, not full on blues, while reds become purple.
I was so excited for the colour improvements, I forgot about all the other issues (grain, stability, flickering) they've ALSO gone and fixed. I'm blown away.
November 26, 2025 at 9:04 PM
I could be wrong but, from what I remember, people like Beck didn't get much imput with the Golden Collection.
WHV are notoriously far sloppier than the Archive (just look at the recent Peanuts set) so the prints probably could have always looked like this but just didn't have the right care put in.
November 26, 2025 at 9:03 PM
I get the worry of them suddenly deciding to censor something but, after all this hype, there isn't a chance in hell they'd pull the Volume 2 bullshit again, especially less than a week away from release.
Somebody would've mentioned something. I trust Beck, he has a great respect for these things.
November 26, 2025 at 9:00 PM
They'll 100% be uncut (Waif was never a huge problem compared to others), especially if WB are including two they've banned for decades.
But both had pretty weak restorations, with Friday looking particularly dark (though Waif is one of the better Metrocolors), so it'll be nice to see them improved.
November 26, 2025 at 8:58 PM
I'm just used to updated releases.
A few years back I got the Red Dwarf S1-8 Blu-ray. Just last month, they released a new one containing all the other seasons, so I sold the old one and bought the upgrade.
As long as I got good use out of those original releases, I consider that money well spent.
November 25, 2025 at 6:48 PM
Plus, it was just a cool spectacle being able to see the shorts in HD widescreen, instead of the awfully cropped DVD set.
The cinematic aspect ratio really does look fantastic when presented properly, even if the overall production values are obviously lower. It makes the shorts far more enjoyable.
November 25, 2025 at 1:55 PM
I liked it, even if the actual shorts are the weakest of the HB era. Its sales contributed to the Anthology set so I ain’t sore about that aspect (I could always sell it or give it to a friend, anyway).
I got 10 months of use out of it, so that’s money well spent in my eyes.
November 25, 2025 at 1:53 PM
The only thing I wish this reprint had was proper encoding on the widescreen stuff.
99% of this set is fantastic, from the commentaries to featurettes to old trailers to other stuff. It's just the 10th anniversary special being encoded to 4:3 that I have a gripe with.
