This is a completely joyful photo, but the best thing about it is that our brilliant, dedicated, and absolutely tireless paralegals are front and center where they belong. NO ONE works harder or cares more about this case to protect First Amendment rights. The rest of us would be lost without them.

Grateful for the supporters who showed up outside the courthouse this morning! (Didn’t see any Bovino/ICE supporters, despite a flyer campaign: read into that what you will about their level of support in Chicago.)

BREAKING NEWS: We just filed a notice with Judge Sara Ellis that Gregory Bovino appears to have PERSONALLY violated her restraining order today in Little Village, by throwing a cannister of chemical weapons against peaceful protesters.

Yesterday, Judge Ellis asked CBP official Kyle Harvick about this extraordinary photo of an unarmed minor by Anthony Vasquez of the @chicago.suntimes.com. "Do you believe then that how that particular juvenile was treated was consistent with CBP's use of force policies with respect to juveniles?"

Attached are English-language flyers for a site to report abuses by federal agents that violate the Temporary Restraining Order in Northern IL, which restricts excessive force against protesters and press, and requires agents to wear ID. We hope folks will distribute these where they're needed.

A few more flyers below for reporting abuses by ICE and other federal agents, which we hope people will distribute widely in areas that could use them. (Spanish versions to follow.)

Attached is flyer-version of the above post.
It would be a real shame if these ended up plastered all over Broadview—especially on those lovely barricades—or in communities that are under siege, so please use responsibly.

Under the TRO issued by Judge Ellis, federal agents can't use excessive force against non-violent protesters or members of the media. They're also required to wear visible ID.

If you've had your rights violated, or witnessed TRO violations, we want to hear your story. Go to tinyurl.com/ChicagoTRO.

Judge Sara L. Ellis, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, sent a powerful message today:
October 9, 2025 at 9:30 PM
BREAKING NEWS: Protesters and members of the press filed a lawsuit this morning over First Amendment violations at the Broadview ICE protests. We are also filing for an emergency Temporary Restraining Order seeking immediate relief from the federal government’s violent suppression of free speech.

Here (in 2 videos) are the moments leading up to the tear gas assault, and the immediate aftermath. (What is doesn't show is that right before the agents decided to mass at the gate, open it, mumble incoherently, and attack, everyone was really just standing around totally peacefully.) 1/2

Several of us went to Broadview tonight to scope out the situation for ourselves. What we witnessed was a completely peaceful—even uneventful—protest/gathering, until the exact moment ICE unleashed a totally unprovoked and unwarranted tear-gas attack.

Loevy AI expert Matt Topic talked AI & journalism with @wbez.org and @chicago.suntimes.com CEO Melissa Bell at Printers Row Lit Fest this Sunday. Some takeaways were that real journalists play a critical role in separating truth from fiction in an AI world, and we ALL need to support them. #PRLF2

Yesterday, a few of us were privileged to see Planks & Pistil's Juneteenth artwork installed in Seward Park, near the former Cabrini Green projects here in Chicago. Artist John Caleb Pendleton's piece "A Higher Law" will be up for the next couple of days, and we encourage you to go see it.

All across the country, lawyers are choosing to #ReaffirmTheOath on this #LawDay, to speak out, stand together, and publicly renew their commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law. Some of our attorneys here at @loevy.com agreed to do it on video.
