It’s a vicious cycle created by poor policy and planning decisions by successive governments over decades in which short-termism has triumphed.

We are all suffering the consequences now.

We need more than just funding - we need a plan.

If these interdependent systems are failing, the outcome will be more and more women leaving the workforce to provide care for family members, deepening skill and labour shortages, and likely further reductions in the total fertility rate leading to fewer children being born.

As the Premiers in Australia unite to appeal to the Prime Minister to honour the 2023 funding agreement for health services, the reality is that the first of the baby boomers are just starting to turn 80 so the next 26 years at least will see increasing demand for health and aged care services.
