I know "you can just do things" isn't always the answer, but most research papers really just need to move to an open access "here's a .pdf on the university library's holdings" model. The review process really doesn't add much compared to the colossal drain on resources imposed by journals.
Our libraries are cutting staff so that Elsevier can have its 32% profit margin
A staggering statistic: "North American researchers were charged over US$2.27 billion by just two for-profit publishers. The Canadian research councils and the US National Science Foundation were allocated US$9.3 billion in that year." What are we doing?

Every time you see “suspected gang member” I want you to think about the massacre in Rio. In its aftermath at least 90 of the 120 who have been identified, including a beheaded teenager, were found to have no connection to the target. Better headline: IL Cops shares database of brown people with ICE
Despite an Illinois law prohibiting data sharing agreements between state law enforcement agencies and federal immigration authorities, Illinois State Police is providing access to gang database info to DHS and has been doing so since 2024

From the Depths of Bluesky archives, Peter Hegseth's inspiration for "Southern Spear".
"C'mere.. Let's fill you up with some whelps."

My Roe, Southern Spear (get it? a 'southern spear' is a penis.)
(..actually it was a randomly generated name from the game. Thanks SE.)

Either the random operation names generator got caught in the DOGE cuts, or the war stores of pre-generated operation names have been sold to private equity, or the fuckers thought the phallic name that abbreviates to SS was so irresistibly cool that they just had to recycle it.

And calling an Operation "Southern Spear" doesn't exactly defuse claims that this is a war designed to distract from a US presidential administration drowning in its own masculine inadequacy.

This is MAGA media testing defenses of Trump for when the inevitable leak/release of the Epstein files reveals proof he's a child molester. Republicans will say he just raped teens, not toddlers, and insist that's better than having a Democratic administration. Obscene monsters, all.

So funny how the WSJ is the only paper of record doing actually investigative reporting on the administration
1) Ethics officials at Fannie Mae investigate how Bill Pulte got Letitia James mortgage docs
2) They send findings to Inspector Gen. of FHFA, which Pulte heads
3) IG sends it to Lindsay Halligan, new USA prosecuting James
4) IG and ethics officials are all fired.

"30 million illegal immigrants" is of course false in any legal definition: it only makes sense within an ethno-nationalist framework defining who gets to be a citizen... Nazi rhetoric - well understood and appreciated by the target audience: racists.
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

Similarities between the AI bubble and the Internet bubble: their impact is transformative and, whatever the serious problems they create, the new technologies are fantastic progress - but not to the point of rendering good old price-earning-ratio obsolete.

The International Criminal Court is ditching Microsoft Office, saying it’s too dependent on US tech, in favor of Open Desk, a German open source alternative.

The move comes after Microsoft revoked ICC head Karim Khan’s email access when he was sanctioned by the US for the warrant against Netanyahu.

Why? They were supporters of defendant/fellow Methodist Brian Straw.

Then Donald Trump went on to be elected president. Twice.
