Kenneth Brown (pictured smoking) was born #otd in Canada, 1911 to a Canadian-American family. He worked as a barber near St. Paul, MN. He was a member of the YCL and CPUSA. He arrived in Spain as early as September 1937 and served with ALB and the Mac Paps until he was KIA on October 13, 1937.

Mike Nussbaum (1923-2023) acted and directed in scores of plays, including the Pulitzer Prize winning New York production “Glengarry Glen Ross.

That’s why ALBA is so important. ALBA brings to life the people and lessons of combating fascism, all too relevant now. We are moved by these heroes, everyday people like ourselves, who stood up. They need the broadest possible audience.

Today, I honor my father, and I fear for my grandchildren. I didn’t expect to be fighting fascism in my own country, and against opponents who are so diabolically good at what they are doing. Like many of you, I shudder to think of the world we leave to those who come after us.

Dear Friends,
I learned about ALBA a few years ago from my father, (actor Mike Nussbaum) late in his life— he was around 97. I was visiting and came across his copy of “The Volunteer”. I discovered that he had wanted to fight in the Spanish Civil War but couldn’t--he was just a young teenager.

Vaughn Costine Love was born #otd in Dayton, TN, 1907. He played college football but was injured in his final year. He moved to New York in 1929. He worked as a coal miner, coffee barista, and actor with the Federal Theater Project. He joined the CPUSA and the AFL.

Albert Robbins (right, on crutches) was born #otd in NYC, 1909. He attended City College of New York and was a member of ROTC. He worked as a sailor and joined the NMU, YCL, CPUSA and the CP of Spain. He arrived in Spain on March 17, 1937 and served with ALB as a lieutenant until WIA at Brunete.

Joseph De Dente was born #otd in Pisa, Italy, in 1911. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1936 and joined the Communist Party in January 1937. He arrived in Spain on March 27, 1937 and worked as an ambulance driver. Based on records, he saw lots of action:

Maynard Goldstein was born #otd in Bronx, NYC in 1913. He studied journalism and advertising at NYU. He joined the CPUSA in 1935 and sailed for Spain on February 20, 1937. He served with ALB from Jarama to Belchite. He walked out of Spain over the Pyrenees and returned to the US on Nov. 16, 1937.

Erwin Everett Wagner was born #otd in 1900 in Yonkers, New York to a Jewish Polish-American family. Erwin (who also went by Everett) attended Columbia University and studied Economics and History. He was a member of the Communist Party and worked as a seaman.

These photographs were taken for Life Magazine in 1938, profiling veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.

In 1951, Nils married Eva Kuzmekas. The couple settled in Provincetown by 1965 and operated several businesses, including Pepe’s Wharf. Nils passed on July 6, 1994.

Nils Berg was born #otd in Kristianstad, Sweden, in 1914. He arrived in the US and joined the Communist Party by 1933. He worked as an artist before he arrived in Spain on February 11, 1937. He served with ALB until he was severely wounded in the head. He returned to the US on June 27, 1937.

He served with ALB and rose to the rank of lieutenant. Robert served at Brunete, Aragon, and the Ebro Offensive and WIA July 20, 1937 at Brunete after he was hit with shrapnel in the knee. He returned to the US on December 20, 1938.

Ricco ("Robert") Joseph Rusciano was born #otd in Queens, NY, in 1909. Robert was born into a large Italian-American family. He attended Cooper Union from 1925-1929 and changed his name to Robert in 1931. A journalist and mechanic, he joined the YCL in 1935 and arrived in Spain on March 7, 1937.

Walter Garland was stationed in Staten Island and upstate New York. He also taught map-making and gave lectures on his role in the Brunete campaign. His multiple requests for combat duty were denied, as was the case for hundreds of ALB vets.

In 1938, Walter lobbied Congress and ran for the NY-17 seat. In 1941 the FBI classified Garland an "individual believed to be the most dangerous & who in all probability should be interned in event of war". Initially denied re-enlistment, he served in the US Army military police & as an instructor.

Walter arrived in Spain on January 10, 1937 and served with ALB and was promoted to command a machine-gun company. He was WIA at Jarama and Brunete. He returned to the US on November 9, 1937 and continued to support ALB through speaking tours and fundraising events (see article by Richard Wright).

Today we are grateful for Walter Benjamin Garland, who was born #otd in Brooklyn, NYC, 1914. He served in the US Army from 1930-1933. He studied math at Brooklyn College and worked as a studio musician working on Your Hit Parade. He joined the CPUSA in 1935 and was involved with the NNC.

George Kaye was born #otd in NYC, 1917. He attended LA Junior College and was a member of ROTC. He worked as a truck driver, clerk and union organizer. He was a member of the YCL and CPUSA. He arrived in Spain on April 10, 1937 after he was briefly arrested in France.

Hyman Rosner was born #otd in Philadelphia, 1903. He dropped out of high school at 16 and became a sailor. He was also a semi professional handball player, earning money in local matches. He was an organizer with the NMU and the CPUSA. He sailed for Spain on January 6, 1937.

Anthony Litvinas (left) was born #otd in Chicago, 1914 to a Lithuanian-American family. He attended high school in Lithuania and worked for the Lithuanian communist daily newspaper. He arrived in Spain on January 27, 1937 and served with ALB. He was WIA at Jarama and Brunete.

Arthur also created Camelot Publishing, producing fantasy magazines Coven 13 and Witchcraft & Sorcery. He also wrote a fantasy trilogy called Camelot, published from 1976-1981. He published his last novel, Home To Avalon, in 1982. Arthur passed on Jan. 27, 1986.

After the war he married Ruth Jurow & worked for her father. By the mid-1960s, Arthur became an author. In 1967, he published The Abraham Lincoln Brigade based on interviews with volunteers, republished as Death in the Olive Groves in 1986. In 1973, Arthur published Spain! Our Unfinished Revolution.
