In their effort to catch up with the #USSR, which had already placed two cosmonauts into orbit, the US on #ThisDayInHistory in 1961 launched the #MercuryAtlas5 mission, taking the #chimpanzee Enos into orbit. Enos returned safely and remains the only chimp to have been in orbit.
