There are a lot of ways to get gratification out of a particular piece of entertainment, from the visceral disgust of aggressive slasher gore movies, to the profound sadness of emotionally wrenching tragedies, to hilarious slapstick. Are all of those things fun?

You get a lot further in this discussion if you ignore the issue of "fun" and instead pick a better word to use as your metric, perhaps "gratifying."

When you can define "fun," get back to me. That's the crux of the issue: the definition of "fun" is pliable, and there are a lot of different ways to have fun, including Bad, Wrong Fun, which is the best fun.

I’d highly recommend picking out a lightweight TTRPG and seeing where it takes you. These books are full of great starting points that act as a jumping point flesh out your own stories rather than relying on a more rigid world to steer you. I’m definitely going to try digging deeper myself. 3/2
