but eventually they gave up and even stopped giving and receiving gifts themselves. At least within the family. But I do have to say they are still the exception where I live. I still see a lot of people feeling the need to buy gifts all the time.

Just saw this on the German news. This is crazy. As if a regular fire in such a building isn't already bad enough...
Also the concrete doesn't really help much if the doors are made of wood too, which is the case in my apartment complex.
If a major fire were to break out, it could easily spread.
